New Flip Video camera

The folks at Flip Video (which I have talked a lot about) sent me a note about the company's newest video camera:

Pure Digital Technologies Launches Super-Slim Flip VideoTM Mino 3 oz. camcorder is the ultimate accessory for the social networking generation

June 4, 2008 - San Francisco, California - Pure Digital Technologies today introduced Flip Video Mino, the company's latest innovation in its popular, critically-acclaimed Flip Video family of camcorders. Weighing in at just over three ounces, the remarkably slim yet powerful Flip Video Mino raises the bar for high-quality, portable, and easy-to-use video. Smaller than most cell phones, Mino fits neatly into a jeans pocket to capture life's stories whenever and wherever they happen - at a party, a concert, the beach, even on a bike ride. The $179.99 (MSRP)
Mino also features Flip Video's built-in software that allows consumers to simply plug the camcorder's signature flip-out USB arm into any computer for immediate editing and sharing. For the first time, the Flip Video software enables users to upload video directly to MySpace as well as to YouTube and AOL Video, making it even easier to share video.

With 2GB of on-board flash memory, Mino allows consumers to capture up to 60 minutes of high-quality video using the camcorder's intuitive new touch-sensitive buttons to record, play, fast forward, rewind, pause and delete. Users can instantly play back video on the camcorder's 1.5-inch anti-glare LCD display. Mino uses an internal, rechargeable lithium-ion battery that conveniently recharges whenever the camcorder's USB arm is connected to a computer and provides more than four hours of recording time on a single charge.
I have written so much about this camera, that you can read it here.

Flip Video offers HD camera

If you have read this blog for a while, you know I am a big Flip Video evangelist.  Why?  I simply used one.  My zeal has passed on to lots of others at this point.  That says a lot about the product.

Heck, even while I was taking video of James' birth, a hospital staffer asked me about this tiny video camera.

Now Pure Digital, the maker of The Flip, is unleashing an HD camcorder on us. It just came out this Wednesday.  The following is from an email the company's rep sent me:

The remarkably slim Flip Mino HD will make shooting and sharing HD video simple and affordable for the first time. Weighing just over 3 oz., the $229 Mino HD is a great alternative to
a pricey, bulky HD camcorder.

The Mino HD features 720p resolution, 4GB built in memory, 60 minutes of recording and all-new built-in FlipShare software for even easier saving, organizing and sharing of video from your computer. And one more industry first: Mino HD is the first and only custom "designable" HD camcorder.

Here are the details for the spec folks:

Flip MinoHD Features and Availability:
* Weight: 3.3 oz.
* Resolution: HD 720p
* 4 GB of internal memory to record up to 60 minutes of HD video
* 1.5 inch anti-glare LCD display
* Internal, lithium ion battery recharges when USB arm is connected to computer
* One-touch recording with 2x digital zoom
* Touch-sensitive buttons for recording, playback, fast forward, rewind, pause and delete
* FlipShare software:
o On-board application installs directly when connected to any PC or Mac
o Drag-and-drop interface for easy browsing, playback, organizing and video archiving
o Integrated online video publishing to YouTube, MySpace, and AOL Video
o Free, unlimited private emailing of videos and video greeting cards
o Custom movie editing, with the option to use your own music and add titles/credits
o Capture still photos from any standard or high definition video
o Order DVDs online and have them shipped anywhere in the world
o TV connection for instant viewing (cable included)
o Tripod Mount
* Available in black at Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, WalMart.com, TheFlip.com and leading retailers
* "Designable" at TheFlip.com
* Suggested retail price: $229.99

More here.

Now I hope HD stands for high definition.  I don't actually see that spelled out anywhere online or in the emails to me.  Naturally we would all assume, but I want to actually see it in writing.

VIDEO: BarCamp Houston 2 coverage

Better late than never. Here is my coverage of Barcamp Houston 2. Mine took a little longer
because I pulled out the Flip Video camera and decided to cut some mikemcguff.com blog web TV coverage.

Those included in the video are:
I got a lot out of BarCamp Houston, especially in the afternoon sessions. My only wishes would be keeping sessions on time and a microphone for the speakers. Other things that were interesting, Wowio and Spresent, plus Dwight Silverman's Twitter stream coverage.

I used the Flip Video camera to shoot this. I'm sure my TV photographer friends would be wincing in pain from watching this. But when you are shooting with a camera that looks like an iPod, there are some concessions to make with quality. I learned a lot about shooting with the Flip Video. Number 1, pay attention to holding it straight on your subject, but when you are asking questions and concentrating on that, you forget. This video could be the argument against one man bands, but if I had an actual camera it would have turned out very different. Watch out for my Flip Video review soon.

The Sony NSC-GC1 vs. the Pure Digital Flip Video Ultra

I've been talking about Pure Digital's Flip Video for a while now. In fact, all of those videos I shot in Japan were taken with my Flip Video camera.

Now Sony is releasing the NSC-GC1 video camera which looks like it could give Flip Video a run for its money.

Read a comparison review between the two.

REVIEW: Flip Video is very portable

I have been testing out the Flip Video camera by Pure Digital Technologies for a while now and liked it so much, I went out and bought one of my own.

It is how I shot most of my videos.

Why not? It is portable, inexpensive for a video camera and it has a built-in USB connection which puts video straight into the computer and up on YouTube or Brightcove.

Mike McGuff hangs with David Beckham and Bill Murray

Last week at this time I was in Los Angeles. You notice there were no videos, pictures, blog posts or multimedia of any kind. Even I need a break sometimes.

It was a great trip. Last Thursday night we ate at sushi hot spot Katana on Sunset. After ordering a bunch of food, some famous patrons entered our area. It was David and Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham. They were with a bunch of people, but not Tom and Katie Cruise.

Other patrons were not afraid to outright stare at the Beckham group. Especially the female fans. I kept trying to turn around and catch a glimpse of Posh Spice, but someone was always in the way. When I got up to leave, I certainly took a slow walk by to see her. She looks pretty much the same as she does in the media. That night she was a brunette. My friend who was there with me says she thought David was as good looking as he is in pictures.

The couple had two big body guards in tow. When David Beckham got up to use the restroom, my friend told me to follow him in there. I refused. That would be weird.

The next day on Friday, it was raining off and on so we went inside to the Beverly Center. In Bloomingdales we saw Bill Murray! He was right by us. My friend says she thought he was with Linda Cardellini who is an actress on ER. I don't watch the show and didn't recognize her so I am not sure if that was her or not.

Bill Murray did not look approachable, but he did look bored. It appears they had an assistant that he would talk with from time to time. It probably made him look less approachable to fans. Here is a guy I would like to talk with. Heck, I was just in the Tokyo hotel he shot Lost in Translation in just a few weeks ago. That's a conversation starter if I ever heard of one.

Here is where I am disappointed in myself. I had my Flip Video on me and did not use it. My wife says that was a good thing and I should respect Murray's (or any celebrity's) privacy. The blogger in me feels differently, but what could I have really done? Run up to him rolling video? I'm sure I would have had a more interesting story for you as I was kicked out of the mall. Been there done that. As teens we had an affinity for shooting in The Galleria. Back then, mall security wasn't so much for that. I was "banned" by a security guard for a year.

What should I have done? Used The Flip video camera? Or respect a star's privacy?

Star Wars at Hobby Airport in Houston

I must admit, I did go a little crazy over the Star Wars characters and lightsaber that landed at Hobby Airport in Houston Tuesday. Just a little. My pal Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers were there after all. R2-D2 and Boba Fett were there too with a few others.

I went out there for work with my Nikon D50 and Flip Video camera. Here is the video I made. It is much better than my BarCamp Houston 2 video from earlier this week.

CLICK HERE TO READ THE STORY AND SEE EVEN MORE PICTURES

Check out my Flickr photos of the event.

Michael Garfield, The High Tech Texan, happened to land at Hobby while all of this was going on. He said he walked up to me and I was in some kind of trance and ignored him! Who can blame me. I was trying to take still pictures and video a the same time while avoiding all of the TV and newspaper photographers, radio reporters, ABC News crew as well as all of the Southwest Airlines employees and passengers. Talk about one man band (aka the future of web journalism).

VIDEO: My appearance on 950 KPRC-AM

Here is some of my appearance on Mojo 950 KPRC-AM with the High Tech Texan Michael Garfield. We talked about all kinds of things and as you might imagine blogging was one of them.

Thanks to all of the comments, positive and negative, I received after the appearance.

Also thanks to Ed Brandon for calling in! That's the power of Facebook. I said in my status that I would be on the radio, he saw it and listened.

You'll be able to hear this broadcast again this coming Saturday at 3pm on 950 KPRC
.

BTW, I used a Flip Video camera to tape this video. Not bad huh? You should see the uncompressed version pre-YouTube - even better.

Harris County candidates answering tough questions - caught on camera

One of my latest projects for abc13.com was designing the layout for this Harris County candidate Q&A page.

Paige Hewitt is a KTRK producer who used to work for the Houston Chronicle. For this project she was armed with one of my favorite things in the world, The Flip video camera and list of her tough questions, plus questions from the politico's opponents! Now that's rough! (And you see why we call it the Political Paige...get it?)

Watch the candidates work up a sweat answering the questions us voters deserve to know!

WATCH THE VIDEOS

No one will be as impressed as I am concerning my artwork with the incorporated flash video to show the big named candidates who answered the questions. First time I ever tried this and it appears to have worked.

The last River Oaks Shopping Center post

Well part of the River Oaks Shopping Center came down in Houston and now we all move on. I am very red too. I got a killer sunburn waiting and watching it be demolished.

You can get my complete coverage of the event at abc13.com. Read about it and look at the pictures I took. In the past weeks, I have also been gathering historic photos of the place so there is a slide show of that too. Naturally we have video of the event too.

It's all right here

iPod Touch and more

Walt Mossberg reviews the iPod Touch. He says it's a close cousin to the iPhone that connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi wireless networking and replaces the famous iPod click wheel with a touch screen.

David Pogue says beware of the tapeless camcorder. Yeah, but has he tried The Flip video? I think I'm in love.

KPRC 2 meteorologist Jonathan Novack is leaving

The rumors of a change in the KPRC Local 2 weather center are true. It turns out weekend evening meteorologist, weather graphics producer and feature reporter Jonathan Novack is leaving the station. Jonathan Novack is on ABC's The Bachelorette.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2024
Jonathan Novack returns to Houston with CW39

"I will be hard-pressed to find a city with nicer people and better food," Novack told the mikemcguff.com blog. "I've certainly made some incredible memories during my time in Houston and at KPRC Local2."

I am totally envious of Jonathan for one of his assignments. A few years ago he interviewed Metallica's Kirk Hammett at SXSW. Hammett was impressed by Novack's Flip Video camera.

I interviewed all the members of Metallica once, but it was only over satellite. I was in Houston looking at the band members on a live video feed and talking into their ear pieces wherever they were in California. They told me a memorable time in Houston was in 1986 or so when they played here during a freak ice storm (ironically for this post weather related).

Back on topic, Novack is being coy with what he's doing next career wise.

Attack of the new camcorders

This is a good attack. There are so many new camcorders coming out that are high-def or ready to throw video right onto the Internet.

David Pogue of the NY Times takes a look at the new crop of HDTV camcorders:
The beauty of hard-drive camcorders like these — the Sony Handycam HDR-SR7 and the JVC Everio GZ-HD7 — is that you never have to rewind or fast forward; you can use an on-screen table of thumbnail images to jump to any scene for immediate playback. You never have to worry about recording over something by accident. And you never have to wonder if there’s a blank tape inside.

Both of these new machines are clad in shiny, futuristic black cases. Each can store five hours of high-def recordings at top quality — which is a very, very high quality indeed. The picture is so sharp, it could slice a tomato.

Both cameras connect to a high-def TV set using either HDMI, which is a single cable that carries both picture and sound, or component cables, which have three for picture and two for sound. Both include goodies that are usually missing on cheaper camcorders, like a microphone jack and, on the Sony, a headphone jack. Both have built-in lens covers — a great feature — and a “minutes remaining” battery display.

READ THE REST

I also spotted this new USB camera:

On sale at a big chain near you today is “The Flip,” a point-and-shoot video camera from Pure Digital the size of your palm which plugs directly into a USB port and will upload your video directly to YouTube, according to Matt Marshall at VentureBeat. A 30-minute model will sell for $119.95 and a 60-minute model will sell for $149.95.

SEE MORE

Don't tell my wife, but I wouldn't mind going out and splurging on a high-def cam. She was upset when I went to Walgreens a few months ago and purchased a $99 AIPTEK mini SD camera. I threw 2 gigs in there and I was ready to go. Is it the best camera? No, but once again, let me remind you of the price! I have used it to put videos on abc13.com, but before you think that is a seal of approval, you could definitely tell the difference between this camera and the site's usual video quality.

Ten realities for radio
When it comes to digital strategies, traditional media has been slow to embrace the opportunity. There have been several articles written of late spotlighting the fact that of all the traditional mediums, radio lags farthest behind in adapting a coherent digital strategy and monetizing their efforts. Here are some realities that need to be considered sooner rather than later.

Apple gets bigger with iPad

Female anchors and reporters on NPR were saying, "No women were in the room when Apple came up with the name iPad":

iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds-- thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.

iPad features 12 next-generation Multi-Touch applications. Every app works in both portrait and landscape, automatically animating between views as the user rotates iPad in any direction. The precise Multi-Touch interface makes surfing the web on iPad an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. Reading and sending email is fun and easy on iPad's large screen and almost full-size "soft" keyboard. Import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad's elegant slideshows. Watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD or flip through pages of an e-book you downloaded from Apple's new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.

iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. The iTunes® Store gives you access to the world's most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video. Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple's new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.

Apple also introduced a new version of iWork® for iPad, the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. With Pages®, Keynote® and Numbers® you can create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions and formulas. The three apps will be available separately through the App Store for $9.99 each.

iPad syncs with iTunes just like the iPhone and iPod touch, using the standard Apple 30-pin to USB cable, so you can sync all of your contacts, photos, music, movies, TV shows, applications and more from your Mac or PC. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

iPad's brilliant 9.7-inch, LED-backlit display features IPS technology to deliver crisp, clear images and consistent color with an ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angle. The highly precise, capacitive Multi-Touch display is amazingly accurate and responsive whether scrolling web pages or playing games. The intelligent soft keyboard pioneered on iPhone takes advantage of iPad's larger display to offer an almost full-size soft keyboard. iPad also connects to the new iPad Keyboard Dock with a full-size traditional keyboard.

iPad is powered by A4, Apple's next-generation system-on-a-chip. Designed by Apple, the new A4 chip provides exceptional processor and graphics performance along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.* Apple's advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging technology deliver up to 1,000 charge cycles without a significant decrease in battery capacity over a typical five year lifespan.**

iPad comes in two versions--one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G. iPad includes the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the 3G versions support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA networks. Apple and AT&T announced breakthrough 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad with easy, on-device activation and management.

Continuing Apple's dedication to designing and creating environmentally responsible products, each iPad enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy-efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.

Apple today released a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPad, so developers can create amazing new applications designed to take advantage of iPad's capabilities. The SDK includes a simulator that lets developers test and debug their iPad apps on a Mac, and also lets developers create Universal Applications that run on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Pricing & Availability

iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple's retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. International pricing and worldwide availability will be announced at a later date. iBookstore will be available in the US at launch.

PHOTOS: Houston Life debuts on #KPRC2 with a zombie

Houston Life debuts on KPRC 2 with a quick paced format

 photo houstonlife_1_zpsg5uxyqnq.jpg

Just like a bunch of other Houstonians' first day today, the hosts and crew of Houston Life are starting out fresh, not in a classroom, but a brand new locally produced KPRC 2 lifestyle show.

Hosts Jennifer Broome (former WOAI San Antonio meteorologist, FOX 31 KDVR Denver's Good Day Colorado) and Derrick Shore (formerly of KCET Los Angeles) started the show by jumping out of a plane in a recorded segment (now doing that live would have been a technical masterpiece). I would imagine the skydiving stunt is a great metaphor for the first day launch of a new talk show.

After a catchy theme song (complete with lyrics), through the magic of TV, the next us viewers saw were the hosts live from their new studio digs at the swanky Houston Galleria expansion next to Nordstrom. The duo even got some cheers as they ran through the set door from the shopping mall crowd.

If you've ever worked in television, then you know soap opera fans are passionate. The ones who are still watching, even more so, as their viewing options are dwindling. Shore calmed tensions by quickly mentioning that Days of Our Lives was moving from 1pm to right after Houston Life at 2pm.

Like Sands through an hourglass, these are the days of our zombies? Yes, after a quick clip of the hosts skydiving again, a zombie was featured chained on set. I am not joking. Did not expect this. Turns out it was a quick segment about the Houston Escape Room game with what I'm guessing was a fake professor. I wonder if the show will ever let me come on the air dressed as a werewolf?

Houston Life doesn't seem to stay on anyone subject too long. Next, it was a whirlwind tour of places around the Bayou City. We saw a quick clip of the hosts at iFLY. Then a quick edited package segment of the hosts at Topgolf.

After the first commercial break, Chef Ronnie Killen was live in the studio doing one of the things he does best...barbecue and the sauces to go with it. From personal experience, if you want to eat at Killen's Barbecue in Pearland, get there early. The menu items go fast and once all the food is gone, the place shuts down for the day. This was the longest segment of the show so far.

After the second commercial break, the hosts appeared in a recorded segment participating in a beer bicycle tour to the Saint Arnold Brewing Company. Once at the beer HQ, they got a behind the scenes tour of the operation. And just to show that Shore has no fear, he went to the main beer hall full of customers and danced around interviewing people while wearing a lederhosen. I believe this was a Houston TV first for me.

Obviously the show is live, so after break three, the hosts checked back with KPRC 2 meteorologist Justin Stapleton for a quick weather update. Next up, an edited package segment of Shore and Broome getting batty at the Waugh Drive Bat Colony. A favorite of Houston TV feature segments. This was followed by an in studio interview with bat expert Suzanne Jurek.

Not related to the show, but during the next TV ads, I learned The Texas Hammer, attorney Jim Adler, is being joined by his son Bill, who is also a Texas Hammer. I never thought we would have two hammers.

Reporter Stephanie Gerry was up next in an edited package report from Houston Texans tailgating. The package went to black all of a sudden, then Gerry was in the studio with the hosts for more tailgating talk with Houston Pitmaker. Afterwards Houston Texans cheerleaders showed up talking about their new calendar! The cheerleaders displayed a proclamation from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner declaring today Houston Life Day.

After the break, was an in studio interview with the principal and students from the British International School of Houston with a few performances. This seemed to be one of the longer segments of the show.

The show ended with cake, confetti and champagne. The zombie stayed around for this too. Maybe he should have come back to help kill a little time (insert rim shot).

Broome and Shore appear to have good chemistry and are clearly comfortable doing this type of format.

Houston Life Executive Producer Don Graham who helped start and was in charge of KHOU 11's Great Day Houston for many years, clearly has lots of experience in the talk show arena. In fact, he even did time as the Executive in Charge of Production for the The Gayle King Show back in the 90s.

One thing Graham and the staff seem to want is to keep the attention of the Facebook generation. For the most part, the show moves at such a quick pace that viewers never really get too much of one thing. One could argue there might not be a lot of in depth information, but on the flip side, if anything gets too boring, viewers won't have time to flip the channel (or start browsing social media on the so-called second screen).

Outside of the one blank screen and time to kill at the end, the show seemed pretty error free. That's quite a feat since the show takes place live from a location other than an actual TV studio. The only other problem was with the channel 2 website. Online users were promised a livestream of the show but it wasn't there. Where the video player was supped to be was a graphic. I saw a complaint on the show's Facebook page too.

What are your thoughts on the new show?
