Courtney Zavala to leave KPRC 2 and TV

KPRC 2 anchor Courtney Zavala is saying goodbye to TV and KPRC 2

KPRC 2 weekend morning Courtney Zavala is calling it a career at the Houston NBC affiliate.

"It's time for me to bow out gracefully and go out the way I want to go out instead of them telling me it's time to leave," Zavala told mikemcguff.com. "It was not an easy decision, it was several months in the making."

Zavala, who joined KPRC back in 2003, tells me her contract was up and the station offered her another, but she chose to leave. With no future career plans, she's going to hang out with her husband and two boys, Connor and Andrew, who are seven and three and a half.

"I feel like I missed so much of my family life, that I'm just ready to be present," Zavala told me.

She says the family is certainly excited to have her home, especially with Christmas coming up.

For nine years, Zavala has been waking up at 2am for five days a week. She says you never fully get used to it, but her husband's support made it easier - especially with the kids.

And speaking of the boys, Zavala said there was the guilt of never being there for activities. Soccer games were only witnessed through photos, rarely in person.

Before KPRC, Zavala worked in Salt Lake City at KSTU Fox 13 as a fill-in anchor/reporter. She started TV in Texas at KMID in Midland.  A Chicago native, Zavala is a gradate of St. Xavier University.

Fans of Zavala will get to have one more Saturday and Sunday with the channel 2 anchor as her last two newscasts are this weekend.

The Zavala family will remain in Houston.

  1. Good to know Courtney & her family are staying in Houston.

  2. Agree!!! Glad Courtney is staying in Houston. Will miss her on TV as I always enjoyed her delivery. And she is right on one thing that is generally right in life: It always better to go out on your own terms (whenever and wherever) than being told that it is time to leave.

  3. I met you back in 2010 at Texas Children's emergency room. You are such a sweet young lady :)) Enjoy the precious time wit your family

  4. I understand as a Mom the importance of staying home with your children. You can always return when the boys get older. You will be truly missed. I always enjoyed watching you. Untill we meet again, Good Health, Happiness and Love.

  5. You will be missed very much by us and the station I am sure! Enjoy your time with your family. Please stay in touch!

  6. She will definitely be missed on TV, but I'm glad she and her family are staying here. She said she will still be active on Twitter and Facebook, so at least she'll still be around that way.

  7. McGuff, do you know when Courtney's last weekend newscast will be on KPRC-TV ?

  8. It was inevitable. SYan coming in was the writing on the wall. Well, that, and the fact that Zavala was neck-in-neck with Reyna as the two most incompetent anchors they have. Good thing Freeman, McNeil and Sachse have their air bags as insurance or they'd have been gone long ago as well.

    1. If you have the guts to reply with all the negativity, have the stones to put your name behind the statements instead of being a huge coward and hiding behind the anonymity! Your comments carry no weight or credibility as you hide behind your toy box.

    2. I'm not the person you are talking to, but do you realize you are replying under "anon?" No offense, but the same could be said of you.

    3. I am not criticizing or ripping people for doing their job. I am not doing anything other than questioning why people feel the need to hide and then throw stones? I wish to stay anonymous for personal reasons and to not draw attention to myself or my work place. I am trying to stress positive energy and support for one another, and avoiding the throwing of stones by arm chair experts who don't work in the field or know enough details to pass such critical judgement. Make sense?

    4. So, people who you think don't work in the field aren't allowed to have their opinions and express them? Does that mean you don't care about listeners / viewers? I mean, they don't work in the field, so I guess they don't matter, right? Do they only matter if they agree with you? Everything that person said is the truth. If they came to work without any makeup on, their hair pulled back and baggy shirts, do you really think they would have their jobs? Please get in the real world! You are making excuses as to why you don't post your name, while ripping on others for doing the same. If you work in the field, why are you stressing positive energy and support for them on here? Why can't you do it in person, email, or call them?

    5. Everyone deserves to work, but as a TV anchor your job is to read and you can't argue that Courtney struggled in that category. We used to watch and it was a running game to see how long into a broadcast Courtney would
Go before messing up..the record was 8 seconds. Thusly as an on air anchor, she had to go. Review any old broadcasts and you'll see what I mean.

  9. Argh! She was the only reason I watched the news Saturday morning. Wishing her the best.

    1. Why the negativity? If you cannot say anything nice, do not say anything at all.

    2. So, you should only tell people what they want to hear?

  10. Glad she's leaving. Always found her annoying and unprofessional.

  11. I knew the complimentary comments couldn't last. Typical. Someone always has to go negative. Pathetic, toxic & miserable people...you should find something better to do. Get a life!

    2. Agree with everything that you sad. It really sad how people have become so mean on the Internet thinking that can spit out stuff that they wouldn't dare say to a person-face to face. So sad.

    3. The above person said, " Glad she's leaving. Always found her annoying and unprofessional." If you think that is mean, then you are very sheltered. The other person called people," pathetic, toxic $ miserable" and told them to , " get a life." That's is mean, but you are okay with that. Isn't that a double standard?

    4. I was actually refwring to people in general when it comes to the internet. The two comments that you mentioned didn't strike out as mean. Pardon.

    5. Okay, I understand. Sorry.

    6. Agreed! I liked Courtney a lot. If that person didn't like her, there's 11,13 or 26 to watch

    7. I have always admired your journalism and you are an excellent teamplayer. You are beautiful and I am watchining your last show with your boys. Awesome lady!!!

  12. I've never understood why people can't express their opinions without being called haters, pathetic, toxic, sad, etc. Secure people know that if you are going to listen to the positive, then you have to listen to the negative, because both can/ could be true. Insecure people only listen to what they want to hear and that's why they never become the best they can be. I'm not the person that wrote the comment at 8:17. I actually like her, but I don't have a problem with that person expressing their opinion.

  13. Courtney should ignore the criticism & shake the haters off !

    1. You really have to love how people are called haters, if they don't agree with someone. I guess you go around telling everyone how great they are, especially when they aren't? Isn't that lying and being fake? People are just so insecure. They have to have everyone agree with them. It's sad .

  14. I have loved watching you all these years. I will miss your beautiful face in the mornings. I under stand your wish to spend more time with the boys. best wishes to you and your family.

    1. It reads as if she wanted a better anchor gig but didn't get it and was told she'd never get it, so she used the "more time with family" excuse to leave.

      Delete
    2. I think she was serious about her reason for leaving, she got emotional and she brought her kids on

      Delete
  15. She will take off for a while, then move over to Fox 26 everyone goes to 26 when they can't find another job. Houston is a very odd TV market.

  16. Like who? Katie McCall is the only person I can think of

  17. Good for you Courtney. Choosing family over career. Good luck.

  18. The only way to subdue the mean jerks is to out number their nastiness with thanks to Courtney for her work. As a professional who is also a mom, I cheer her on to be a bigger presence in her kiddos lives while they're still young. That's a missed window you can't get back.

  20. I'm a news junkie and have live all over the U.S. and travel everywhere and the only reason I live why I watched channel 2 on sunday instead of cbs morning show (that I watch everywhere else) is because of Courtney. She is very professional and friendly touch. Thank you

  21. I will miss your smiling face in the morning! But wish you the best, and admire you for not wanting to miss the best years of your children's lives! Hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

  22. A lot of popular people are leaving Channel 2. Maybe, it's the General Manager and executives that are the problem. Maybe it's an awful place to work. I read some workplace reviews about them on the internet and they weren't good.

It might be time for Channel 2 to get a new General Manager and executives. That might stop a lot of the popular talent from leaving.

    1. Plus, Anthony Yanez will be leaving come January. He's going to KNBC-TV NBC 4 Los Angeles.

    2. They're leaving because they have no chance to grow at KPRC; thay station is in love with the terrible Wayne Newton/Joan Rivers lineup at 10, the complete failure of Reyna anchoring, and the laughingstock AM team of Arrogant Owen and Chesty LaRue.
Irika, Ian, Dannielle, Wendy and Linda were so much better than the above mentioned "talent".

    3. I'm also expecting Rachel McNeil to leave KPRC-TV at some point for bigger fish to fry.

  23. Who do y'all expect to replace Courtney on the weekend mornings at KPRC-TV ?

    1. If internally filled, Syan or Courtney G. I think it'll be a female, but if they go with a guy maybe Boyle will get a crack but not sure if that's his desired path.
Their non-expert consumer expert, who is a failed past investigative reporter and a failed anchor, may get a crack. Hopefully it won't be Reyna. She's hard to watch and worse to listen to.
One thing for sure -- can't be the terrible Ruben.

  24. Well I will miss Courtney very much............I loved waking up to her on the weekend.

  25. To the perpetual Channel 2/Jennifer Reyna detractor at 11/26, 4:53, a move from weekend evening to weekend morning would be a demotion for Syan Rhodes.

    1. Perhaps she'd do both and less weekday anchoring, thus expanding her anchoring exposure?
Regardless, I agree that Reyna is utterly incompetent and should be relieved of her duties entirely.

    2. It just goes to show how self-absorbed you are when you believe that your labeling Ms. Reyna " incompetent" every chance you get will make her so. You hope too that others will take your word as fact, but viewers know otherwise.
      Stalking comes in many forms!

      Delete
    3. Really? You're gonna drop a "stalking" card? Why not call him/her a racist while you're at it?
The fact is, many in the public recognize that Jen Reyna is incompetent, she can't spell "incompetent" and the way she speaks she can't say "incompetent" without stumbling over the syllables. How did that Bruckbauer judge ever pick her as a bikini model winner is beyond me. It sure wasn't for her brains. Or looks.

    4. Here you go again, multiple posts to create the appearance of concurrence. I know that both threads are from you as it has been a habit of yours. The question is: Why do you hate the young lady so deeply? Stalking takes many forms indeed!

    5. I think that you have to realize that people have different tastes. You like Jennifer, because she is tiny, has big boobs, wears tight clothes , has long, straight hair and wears a lot of makeup. That's okay. Others like women that don't have all that, which there are very few of. They live women that have gotten everything they have through talent, hard work and busting their butts in smaller markets. That's okay. Just agree to disagree.

    6. @11:58

I don't hate her. Take off your rose colored glasses and see the truth...

I find her utterly incompetent, in over her head, a complete embarrassment every time she opens her mouth, and after several years in her role I find her to have gotten progressively worse and never improved.

She adds no value or insight. She just lives off perceived attractiveness (bad surgery and unattractive in my opinion). I don't know what business she should be in...but right now she's in the wrong business.

    7. Jennifer Reyna incompetent?

      Why the hostility ?

  30. Ms. Zavala's anchoring slid downhill over the years; she sounds too cutesy now and seems like she has a speech impediment or medical issue. It makes her difficult to take seriously...oddly enough she's commenting on "The Mind of a Murderer", a new show on Investigation Discovery.
