The Storyhive opens large video production studio

Former Houston media members grow video production studio business into new location


Here's the story of Houston media types that successfully struck out on their own and are growing.

The Storyhive was founded by Houston filmmakers Alex Luster (formerly FOX 26 KRIV and abc13 KTRK), Tom Gandy (formerly abc13 KTRK) and Jena Moreno (formerly of the Houston Chronicle).

After five years of producing videos for clients ranging from energy companies to financial firms, The Storyhive is moving into its new, larger facility in Houston's East End with an eye of attracting others to the location.

"We will shoot The Storyhive's corporate videos in our new facility," Moreno told mikemcguff.com. "We also hope to become one of the premiere Houston video production studios with other production companies renting our space."

The firm tells me its new space at 4010 Canal Street is approximately 15,000-square-feet and will house a more than 2,400-square-foot studio -- one of the largest purpose-built media production studios inside of Houston’s 610 Loop.

"The 2,400-square-foot studio will include a roll-up door so that big equipment and vehicles can be driven in for shoots," Gandy said. "The undeveloped portion of the building will be built into a larger, second studio if demand is there."

The studio will be equipped with a professionally installed lighting grid, a green room, conference room, dedicated editing suite, kitchen studio and warehouse space.

"This location helps us stay close to downtown, where many of our clients are based," Luster said. "It's also close to the sports stadiums, universities and Texas Medical Center. It has easy access to major freeways. Finally, Tom, Jena and I live in Eastwood just a mile away from the building, making our commute short!"

On October 19th and 20th, The Storyhive owners will give guided tours of this ‘work-in-progress’ structure during the Eastwood Civic Association’s Annual Historic Home Tour.

Houston filmmaker Alex Luster is leaving his KTRK abc13 editing gig for greener pastures at the Waste Management marketing department [check out his creative goodbye video he produced embedded above].

"I've enjoyed my time at abc13 and will truly miss my colleagues," Luster told mikemcguff.com. "I honestly have nothing negative to say about my time there. I'm excited to join the Waste Management Marketing team."

Right under 20 years, Luster is leaving the TV world where he also worked at Telemundo KTMD and Fox 26 KRIV/My20 KTXH. But before you TV types get too sentimental, Luster has already posted about some of the cool video production toys he's playing with at his new job.

I'm sure we will soon be watching more creative work from Luster, who has already released the acclaimed documentary Stick 'Em Up!.

As for the KTRK abc13 programming department where Luster worked, he is just one of the latest departures in case you are looking for a job in Texas television. Three other staffers in that department departed the ABC owned and operated station near the end of 2013 including Michael Carl. So roll the die and apply.

KTRK 13 gets new state of the art newsroom (video)

The new KTRK 13 newsroom is here. It was being planned all the way back while I still worked there in 2009. Here is a mostly audio free video (this must have been a video someone narrated over during the big party the station held) showing the newsroom through the years, the construction period and the brand new space.

I'm sure the staff is very happy since they were working in the old news studio space for the last few months.

KTRK 13 gets a PR!MO editor in Fox 26 KRIV's Alex Luster

I find myself covering Alex Luster a lot on this blog. From his work at Fox 26 KRIV as a creative services editor to his documentary on Houston street artists called Stick ‘Em Up!

Well now Luster is leaving Fox 26 KRIV and heading down Westpark to the studios of KTRK 13 as a video editor for the stations programming department.

"I had great 13 year run at FOX26," Luster told the mikemcguff.com blog. "I learned a lot and worked with some amazing people along the way. Soon I begin my next chapter at ABC13 in the programming department. I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Good luck to Luster. He will be working with some great people at channel 13. Can't wait to see his documentary either.

Wonder what the heck wheatpasting is? READ MORE HERE You will see this kind of art mostly in Midtown, Montrose and downtown Houston. They are posters placed on abandoned buildings and other surfaces. I think this would qualify as an example.
