KHOU 11 wins prestigious 2014 IRE award

Investigative reporter Jeremy Rogalski and photographer Keith Tomshe take 2014 Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) honors

KHOU 11 is celebrating over this Easter weekend after winning a prestigious 2014 Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. (IRE) award.

"We're always proud when our folks get a big national honor," KHOU Executive News Director Philip Bruce told mikemcguff.com. "This one is especially gratifying because our guys really lived up to our promise to hold the powerful accountable. In this case, it was a handful of cops breaking the public's trust."

Investigative reporter Jeremy Rogalski and photographer Keith Tomshe took the honor for their story Ticket-Rigging Traffic Enforcement.

"[Jeremy and Keith] worked their butts off to nail the details on this and to make sure we were right," added Bruce. "I'm very glad they're both getting recognized for what they did. This wasn't some hyped-up pseudo-investigation--it was great, solid reporting that made a difference. That's what we try to be about in our shop. We're very proud of our I-Team, now and always."

Here are the judges' comments:

You can’t be in two places at once. KHOU used extensive data analysis to prove that members of the Houston Police Department’s traffic enforcement division were falsifying tickets so they could collect more overtime money in court. A group of officers listed each other as witnesses on traffic tickets, even though KHOU proved they were somewhere else, writing a different ticket at the same time. Rogalski used traffic ticket data to find suspicious tickets, and then cross-referenced the tickets with GPS data from the officers’ locations. The investigation led prosecutors to dismiss more than 6,000 tickets. Three officers quit and were indicted on felony charges.

KHOU 11 brings 'Transparency' to police body cameras in new docu-series

UPDATE DECEMBER 07, 2017
KHOU 11 wins Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award 2018

WATCH: The TRANSPARENCY documentary

KHOU 11 investigative reporter Jeremy Rogalski and team produce documentary/web series on Houston police body cameras

Last year we saw the KHOU 11 investigative team deliver a very in-depth investigation into Houston's potholes and now they are back examining Houston Police Department body cameras.

The station says its four-month investigation, called Transparency, reveals that Houston's $8 million police body-camera programming is falling short of its promises.

Reporter Jeremy Rogalski, photojournalist Keith Tomshe, digital investigative reporter Matt Keyser with researchers Stephanie Kuzydym and Ty Scholes have delivered a documentary and expansive web coverage (BodycamTransparency.com) on the subject that looks like nothing I've ever seen produced in Houston.

It proves quality content is still king no matter where it is aired or these days...posted.

Rogalski told mikemcguff.com about the making of this Houston docu-series.

Mike McGuff: When television news consultants are generally telling stations to air shorter stories, what's it like getting to produce an entire documentary and breathe more life into a story narrative?

Jeremy Rogalski: Any journalist’s dream is to hear “go for it, run with it, take the time you need and don’t come back until it’s ready.” That is what happened with the research and production of Transparency. Our Executive News Director, Sally Ramirez took our team “off the grid” for four months to pursue this project without the distractions of the daily news grind. That is refreshing and doesn’t happen very often, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

MM: I noticed no voice overs and higher production values than your average TV news content. Did you feel like you needed to escape the trappings of traditional TV news stories?

JR: Interestingly, the marching orders from our parent company, TEGNA, were “don’t make it look like traditional TV news.” While invigorating on one hand, it also was more than a tad scary for a guy who has done traditional news all his life. That being said, what we really tried to tap into was the journey of it all—the “making of the sausage” and the messiness that comes with it. We outfitted our tiny office with multiple GoPro cameras that were rolling on most every phone call and every back-and-forth session with producers and researchers. The aim was to capture the behind-the-scenes ups and downs of the process, and share them with our audience.

MM: I know TEGNA has what I call an "experimental initiative" with stations. Is it cool knowing you have the opportunity to re-write the rules with TRANSPARENCY?

JR: I wouldn’t call it “experimental journalism,” but rather reinventing local journalism in a digital age. That is cool. But it’s no gimmick either. To be clear, old-fashioned shoe-leather investigative reporting is at this project’s core.

MM: TV stations use to produce documentaries decades ago. Do you see this form of storytelling returning to local television?

JR: Perhaps the best answer is with another question—how do we define local television anymore? TEGNA’s initiative with Transparency and similar projects in other markets is a digital-first launch. You heard right—go spend four months on a project but then don’t immediately put it on television! Why? Again, what do you have in your pocket or purse right now? Not a TV of course, but your smart phone. The fact is, we can harness the extraordinary power of social media to not only reach a larger audience, but engage that audience. We hope to create a social buzz in our community that compels folks to demand more transparency in Houston’s police body camera program.

To see Transparency in its entirety, log onto BodycamTransparency.com. If you want to make your voice heard on the issue, click on the "Call to Action" section of the site.

To experience Transparency on TV, a condensed version will air during the 10pm newscast Friday, November 18th. An uninterrupted version of the entire documentary is set to air 7pm Saturday, December 17th.

KHOU 11 wins Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award 2018

Big news for KHOU 11 today. The TEGNA station has won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award.

The prestigious award recognizes excellence in broadcast, digital and documentary journalism.

The KHOU investigative department was recognized for something I told you about last year.

WATCH: The TRANSPARENCY documentary

Reporter Jeremy Rogalski and team produced “Transparency,” which was a digital-first investigation that exposed the lack of accountability and the improper use of police body cameras in the city of Houston.

"Very humbled by today’s announcement that 'Transparency,' our four-month investigation into the Houston Police body camera program, earned the Alford I. duPont-Columbia University Award, the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize," Rogalski posted on Facebook.

"I'm proud of this body of work on so many levels, in particular that it was a digital-first investigation," KHOU President & General Manager Susan McEldoon told mikemcguff.com. "It’s a perfect example of the positive impact local journalism has on its community."

According to TEGNA, the four-month investigation revealed the Houston Police Department failed to release timely footage for criminal cases and declined to conduct promised video audits. In response to the documentary, the Houston police chief immediately addressed the camera technology issues and pledged to discipline any officers who fail to activate cameras when required.

Here is the award listing:

Transparency

This innovative long-form report, based on a four month-investigation of the Houston PD’s $8 million body camera program, revealed its many weaknesses, including hundreds of cases with missing footage, major delays in releasing videos, and a general lack of accountability.

Jeremy Rogalski, Investigative Reporter;

Keith Tomshe, Investigative Photojournalist;

Stephanie Kuzydym, Investigative Producer;

Ty Scholes, Investigative Producer;

Matt Keyser, Digital Producer;

Ellen Crooke, Vice President News.

TEGNA is the only local broadcast group to receive two silver batons for investigative reporting.

KARE 11 in Minneapolis also took home the prize.

“Like many of our TEGNA stations, KARE and KHOU have produced incredibly meaningful work that impacts the lives of many. Their projects are strong examples of the positive impact of local journalism on communities and the importance of storytelling for the public interest,” said Dave Lougee, president and CEO, TEGNA. “We are committed to continuing to invest in our local stations to ensure they have the journalistic freedom to pursue investigations that make communities stronger without bias or agenda.”

Both stations will be recognized in an awards ceremony hosted by some of the country’s leading broadcast journalists on January 16, 2018, at Columbia University’s Low Memorial Library.

The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award recognizes excellence in broadcast, digital and documentary journalism.

KHOU 11 honored with 3rd straight ‘Overall Excellence’ Murrow Award and more

KHOU 11 and KHOU.com continue to rack up the awards. The station won three Regional Murrows and two Headliners Foundation of Texas Awards. This is the third year in a row I've written a post like this so I'll let the info KHOU 11 sent me take it from here:

The Radio Television Digital News Association has once again recognized KHOU 11 with the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in the Texas-Oklahoma Region. This is the third consecutive year for KHOU to receive this distinction, having gone on to win the National Edward R. Murrow in this category in 2010.

“The Murrow Award for Overall Excellence recognizes the talent of each individual at KHOU,” said Susan McEldoon, KHOU 11 President and General Manager. “To win three years in a row truly highlights the exemplary standard of news our team upholds day after day.”

In all, KHOU won three Regional Murrow Awards. Photojournalist Todd Rogenthien was honored for the second consecutive year in the category of Best Use of Video, and the award for Best Series went to reporter Jeremy Rogalski, photojournalist Keith Tomshe and executive producer David Raziq for the series “Drowning in Neglect.”

The Headliners Foundation of Texas also recently announced winners of its Charles E. Green Awards for excellence in Journalism, naming KHOU’s Kevin Reece as Best Reporter and presenting KHOU.com with the award for Best Online/Special Content for its digital coverage of the I-Team investigation surrounding radiation in the Houston water supply.

The Headliners Foundation works in partnership with the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (TAPB). Each year the TAPB recognizes excellence and achievement in journalism with awards in various categories. In March, KHOU received 20 TAPB Awards, eight of which were Division winners that went on to compete for the Headliners Foundation distinction.

“The commitment to journalism runs deep throughout the newsroom – on air and online,” said Philip Bruce, KHOU 11 Executive News Director. “It is humbling to be honored by organizations so respected in our industry.”

A breakdown of recent KHOU 11 awards is as follows:

Edward R. Murrow Awards – Region 6:

740 KTRH's Michael Berry comments on Houston TV news

740 KTRH's Michael Berry knows the Houston media scene. Either from being a radio talk show host or sitting on the Houston city council, Berry has witnessed all sides.

That's why I want to spotlight a comment Berry left on my blog about the Houston TV news investigative world. It was on my post "KTRK 13 Undercover's Wayne Dolcefino says stop copying my work."

Here it is:

Wayne Dolcefino does the best investigative pieces in Houston. Period. He doesn't always do the best "investigations", but he presents them in the most entertaining style. Say what you will, his style is distinctive, unique, and entertaining. He tells stories, in a manner that makes you wonder if he isn't half laughing while he does so. He's been the best in town for years.

I will say, though, that Greenblatt at 11 has done some good work, as has Jeremy Rogalski on frequent occasion of late. Rogalski's pieces have been notable in the past year. Channel 2's Arnold & Dean do some good work, but it seems they have to file too many to be as in-depth.

Give Wayne his due: imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Ask anyone inside the news biz, and they'll tell you that Wayne's pieces are must-watch.

I sat on City Council for 6 years, and I'll tell you that elected officials quaked when he walked in. There was fear that he had targeted you, because once he did he would lay it all bare.

I've seen how he goes about investigating, the extent to which he chases down sources, and I admire how he weaves it all together. His multiple day pieces are good for ratings, and they're just good tv.

Mike, thanks for writing about this. This is the sort of thing that people need to know about, and maybe this will end the ugly practice.

Houston TV anniversaries decades in the making!

Here are three big Houston TV anniversaries that I've happened to catch over the last months via social media...at times while I was not blogging...so here we go now!

FOX 26 KRIV "What’s Your Point?” host Greg Groogan (36 years in TV as of January 2021)

"I have been at this now 36 years. Thank you Juan Campos numero uno." Groogan posted to Facebook at the time.  "I have served under 14 news directors including former colleague Carolyn Mungo. One factor that I believe always helped my longevity was an absolute disinterest in anchoring. Never, ever asked, to their collective relief. Which, of course, renders this current gig the ultimate irony. That said, I am proud of how this Sunday morning show has evolved into a genuine asset for my community. Watch the conversation and judge for yourself. No harm, no foul if you disagree. The skin toughens substantially after three and half decades."

abc13 KTRK Chief Forecaster David Tillman (20 years at channel 13 as of October 2020)

"Can you believe it?  I've been working at the best television station in the nation for 20 years," Tillman posted to Facebook  at the time.  "Today is my 20 year anniversary. It's been a blast. Let's see if I can make it another 20 years."

KHOU 11 investigative reporter Jeremy Rogalski (20 years at channel 11 as of January 2021)

"Today I celebrate my 20th anniversary at KHOU," Rogalski posted to Facebook at the time.  "A former colleague once told me working in this biz is like having a front-row ticket to life. That is so spot on. Allison, Enron, 9/11, Columbia STS-107, Katrina, Rita, Ike, Harvey and COVID-19 are just some of the major events I covered. And over the past 20 years, our investigations exposed corruption, wrongdoing, taxpayer waste and abuse. We held the powerful accountable and gave a voice to the voiceless. I'm so very grateful for having this front-row seat to tell your stories. Now it's back to work on a Monday!"

KHOU 11 reporter loses World Series bet, must wear boxers in newsroom

It was boxers in the newsroom for KHOU 11 investigative reporter Scott Noll after World Series bet

Lots of Chicago Cubs fans are excited today after a World Series win that "breaks the curse" on the baseball team.

One excited fan is KHOU 11 investigative reporter Jeremy Rogalski.

Not only because his team was triumphant, but because he also won his bet with colleague Scott Noll. Since Noll's Cleveland Indians couldn't get the win, he had to wear Cubs boxers and parade around the channel 11 newsroom. Not only that, but he had to sing a Cub's fight song.

If Rogalski had lost, he would have had to wear the Cleveland logo on his forehead.

Chris Henao exits KHOU 11 from Assistant ND role

Chris Henao, who had served as KHOU 11's assistant news director since 2019, announced on social media that he was laid off from the TEGNA-owned station last week.

UPDATE: I have heard that Wiley Post, who joined KHOU in 2017 as an assistant news director and executive producer, is now serving as the assistant news director.

Here is a portion of what Henao said on Linkedin (with his permission to post here):

"Well, I'm choosing to see this as a blessing in disguise - an opportunity to embrace new challenges, step outside my comfort zone, and continue growing! Leaving behind an amazing newsroom full of talented journalists and friends is bittersweet, for sure.

On my last day at work, I felt nothing but appreciation, gratitude and support from everyone on my team. It filled my heart and fueled my drive with passion and purpose as I look for the next step in my career.

Will the next chapter be as a journalist? I'm not 100 percent sure right now.

If this marks the end of my 34 years in news, I will forever treasure every moment - so many stories, memories, friendships and accomplishments!

To all who have recently received the notice that you are being laidoff - you are not alone.

I am here to support you in any and every way possible. Let's keep moving forward with resilience, optimism and the belief that something great is ahead!"

Henao’s 34-year career in journalism has earned him prestigious honors, including duPont-Columbia, Peabody, Polk, IRE, RTDNA Murrow, Scripps Howard, and EMMY awards.

His tenure at KHOU was a homecoming, having previously worked at the station under former owner Belo. During that time, he served as an investigative photographer and later a producer, spanning from the Anna Werner era to the Jeremy Rogalski years.

Before his return to KHOU, Henao served as assistant news director at KSAT 12 in San Antonio, a Graham Media Group sister station to Channel 11's cross-town rival, KPRC 2 in Houston.

Between his stints at KHOU, he worked as an executive producer for investigations at KCTV 5 News in Kansas City, Missouri, and later spent nearly three years as an investigative producer for KNBC in Los Angeles.

A University of Texas graduate, Henao began his career as a photojournalist at WXIA Atlanta, KXAN Austin, and KGBT Harlingen.

UPDATE JUNE 2025

Chris Henao joins the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) as Chief of Media & Communications.

KHOU 11 makes TV history with Emmy win

I think I'm going to have to make a blog category called 'KHOU 11 awards.' Every time I turn about, KHOU is winning something. Now the station is telling me it made television history. How?

For the second year in a row, KHOU won the Outstanding Regional News Story – Investigative Reporting award at the National News and Documentary Emmy ceremony in New York City. This is the first time a local station has received this award consecutively. Last year, KHOU was awarded the prize in the same category for their investigative piece Hiding Homicide. Here is more from the station:

This year’s winning entry is Soldiers at Risk: The Iraq Water Investigation, which originally aired in May 2009. Reporter Jeremy Rogalski, Executive Producer for Investigative David Raziq and Photojournalist Keith Tomshe uncovered how U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq and often facing 130 degree heat were given an inadequate supply of drinking water. The investigation discovered that some soldiers were rationed to a half-gallon of water a day for as long as one year. Military guidelines, however, recommend seven times that amount.

Due to these conditions, KHOU’s investigative team found that some soldiers were forced to steal water from civilian facilities in order to survive. Many developed severe medical problems that continue to plague them in civilian life.

Soldiers at Risk has also won a National Headliner Award and a Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Award.

“Texas and Houston are well represented in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps,” said Susan McEldoon, KHOU President and General Manager. “We stand behind them and are proud to receive national recognition for a story that exposed a preventable, yet potentially life-threatening obstacle to their service.”

“Just as soldiers answer a call to duty, our investigative team answers a call to uncover injustice and, in this case, danger that shouldn’t exist,” said Keith Connors, KHOU Executive News Director. “There is a profound amount of care that goes into this type of investigative reporting and we are humbled to once again be recognized by the Television Academy with this prestigious award.”

Now remember this is the national Emmy awards, not the Texas version. But don't think the station doesn't have its eyes on some Lone Star Emmy awards. KHOU is in the running for 56 nominations. The station says that is more than any other station in the state of Texas.

Texas winners at the 76th annual National Headliner Awards

The 76th annual National Headliner Awards winners have been announced and Texas represents as usual.

As I have chronicled a bunch lately, we have Mark Greenblatt and crew taking another one home for KHOU 11. But he's not the only one winning for Houston's CBS affiliate:

KHOU-TV, Houston, Mark Greenblatt, David Raziq, Keith Tomshe, Chris Henao and Robyn Hughes, "Under Fire: Discrimination and Corruption in the Texas National Guard"; KHOU-TV, Houston, Jeremy Rogalski, David Raziq and Keith Tomshe, "Solders at Risk: The Iraq Water Investigation"

Out of Dallas we have:

KXAS-TV, Fort Worth, Texas, Matt Barrie and Noah Bullard, "A Game of Hope."

And there were multiple awards for the Austin American-Statesman and The Dallas Morning News.

VIDEO: 11 News I-Team launches on KHOU

I already sort of covered this with a link in an earlier post, but here are promos for KHOU 11's new 11 News I-Team (video below). The station says it will be the largest investigative unit in Texas.

The new group will include senior investigative reporters Jeremy Rogalski and Mark Greenblatt from the former 11 Defenders unit. The other contributors will be Len Cannon, Dave Fehling, Shern-Min Chow, Rucks Russell, Leigh Frillici and Jeff McShan. Others the station says are included include producers and photographers - two of which I am guessing will be producer David Raziq and photojournalist Keith Tomsh.

As I've been blogging in the last year, KHOU 11 has won a ton of awards for investigative journalism.

Here are the promos, hot off the Final Cut Pro machines, for the new 11 News I-Team.

Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 as assistant news director

KSAT 12 San Antonio assistant news director Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 in the same position

KHOU 11's news assistant news director Chris Henao is a familiar name for some in the hallways of the now TEGNA owned station. For almost a decade, back in the Belo days, Henao helped bring a ton of awards to the station, including a Peabody Award, as an investigative photographer and then producer in the Anna Werner days and beyond to the Jeremy Rogalski era.
"I'm very excited to be coming home to KHOU and Houston," Henao told mikemcguff.com. "Excited for all the new possibilities at the new KHOU."

When Henao left the station more than a decade ago, it was still at the Allen Parkway location, so it will be a new world for him at 5718 Westheimer.

"Chris Henao worked at KHOU from the late 1990s through the late 2000s as an Investigative Photojournalist and Producer," Robert Springer, KHOU President and General Manager, told mikemcguff.com. "Chris’ knowledge of Houston and his experiences around the country will be a tremendous addition to an already-strong leadership team in news."

In the last five years, he has been the assistant news director to one of San Antonio's top rated stations, KSAT 12 (sister-station to KPRC).

In between KHOU and KSAT, Henao worked as the executive producer for investigations for KCTV 5 News in Kansas City, Missouri. He then went on to work for almost three years as an investigative producer for KNBC in Los Angeles.

Before his time at channel 11 in Houston, the University of Texas grad worked as a photojournalist for WXIA Atlanta, KXAN Austin and KGBT Harlingen.

Henao starts at KHOU July 15th.

He takes over for Josh Hubbard who left for KGO San Francisco.
