KTRK 13 promotions producer Michael Penix leaves for WLTX 19 as creative services director

It's never fun to have to say goodbye to friends, but this is for a good reason.

KTRK 13 promotions producer Michael Penix (and mikemcguff blog guest contributor) has left Houston for Columbia, South Carolina as creative services director at WLTX 19 (at least there is a little Texas in those call letters), the CBS affiliate.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity and sad to leave channel 13 after 6.5 years," Penix told mikemcguff.com. "I made a lot of great friends and had excellent bosses in Scott Morrow and Tom Ash. They taught me a lot and I'm gonna use that knowledge in Columbia. I'll also miss my night side family...an awesome group that knows how to win".

And get this, the day after Penix left KTRK, he went straight to Las Vegas for his first WLTX assignment...the PromaxBDA convention. Talk about a great first day! His real first day at the Gannett owned station was this Monday.

Rockets: Please Don't Pick Rick!!

Dear Les Alexander and Daryl Morey,

I beg you...in fact, I'm pleading! Do not make Rick Adelman the next Rockets head coach! I know Jeff Van Gundy hasn't turned in his Honda Civic company car yet.

Do your homework on this one guys. His former employers ran him out of Sac-town. The Maloof brothers run a class organization, I love the Palms in Vegas! Adelman did take the Blazers to the NBA Finals and he did take the Kings to the playoffs eight straight years. But what I remember most about Rick is his not so great moments in NBA playoff history...Michael Jordan's '92 first half Finals performance and Robert Horry's dagger in the 2002 Western Conference Finals. The Rockets just lost a Game 7 for the first time in team history. Fans don't need another John Stockton moment. (Sorry if that brings back a month of heavy drinking)

Now, as promised...Andrei Kirilenko's hair cut. "If he dies, he dies." --Ivan Drago. Did this guy let his wife go Flowbee on him. I mean, these two must really like the culture there in Utah. I'm sure they watch 'Big Love' every Sunday. His wife's "one free groupie a year" rule is a unique arrangment. Does he get to pick the girl? I should run that idea by my girlfriend and see what she thinks. I'll let you know how that one turns out...don't be surprised if this is my last post.

Adios Jeff Van Gundy

Well, the Rockets put the final nail in Jeff Van Gundy's coffin today, firing him after four seasons. Let's face it, Jeff wasn't fitting owner Les Alexander's mold. I'm sure he realized what Van Gundy would bring to the table when he hired the defensive minded coach. Yes, defense does win championships, but you also have to score points. (I reliaze Van Gundy can't score points for the players) Four guys scoring in a playoff game never makes an owner happy. Overall, I thought Van Gundy did a fantastic job. With your two star players out multiple games over the course of two seasons, I don't think any other coach could've done any better.

Van Gundy's inbility to trust his younger players hurt the team. "Billy" Spanoulis is one guy who should've played more. We all know about the turmoil the Greek star went through in his rookie season. I belive the kid is a smaller version of Manu "Obi Wan" Ginobili. The Rockets needed a spark off the bench, a guy willing to drive to the basket and not worry about the outcome. "Billy" did light up Team U.S.A for 22 points in the FIBA Championships.

So who do the Rocket's pick now? You know my thoughts on Rick Adelman. I think Larry Brown would be a poor choice, too. What I don't want to hear is rumors of Clyde coaching the Rockets...let me remind you of the job he did at U of H.

Rockets Hire Adelman...Astros Struggling

Obviously, Rockets owner Les Alexander and new general manager Daryl Morey don't read this fantastic blog. That's their first mistake. Their second mistake, hiring Rick Adelman. Congratulations, guys...Rockets fans probably feel like they just got a root canal. Personally, I've never had one, but from what I hear, root canals are no fun.

Adelman resembles Santa Claus more than a basketball coach. Guess what, it's not Christmas. Maybe Rick shouldn't have taken a year off, that way he wouldn't have been available for the Rockets. Why am I blasting on Adelman? It's not his fault he said yes. I'm sure Les Alexander can be a very imposing figure while throwing millions of dollars into your bank account. If Rick gets T-Mac and Yao to that elusive second playoff round, I'll get into the ring with an Orangutan....maybe.

My problem: I KNOW there's someone out there that's a better fit for Houston. Instead of sticking their necks out and taking a chance, Houston's big whigs stuck their heads in the sand. On a brighter note, NFL training camp is just two months away!

Is it me or did I jinx the Astros? I take full responsibility for their bats going quiet. Even I know the ump blew a call at third base that should've ended the inning during Saturday's rally, but Houston needed a break. Besides that six run output against the Strangers...Houston's been AWFUL at the plate. I rarely turn off a game, but I actually changed the channel Sunday. 14-1!!! Six home runs!!

Texas had one of the worst bullpens and depleted pitching staff before the series began. If your team's struggling and looking to build momentum, the Astros are here to help your team. I've seen what Houston can do and it makes me frustrated to watch them struggle. Oh, yeah---getting shutout 4-0 by San Francisco isn't a good start.

Father Suing Over Cardinals Pitcher Death... Right or Wrong?

I was shocked to learn that the father of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was suing Mike Shannon's (former Cardinals great) Restaurant for 'overserving' his son alcohol. Mr. Hancock is also going after the wrecker service, the tow truck driver and the guy who's car was broke down. Oh, yeah...Josh's dad also forgot to mention those plastic road bumps that separate lanes on the highway!?!

Obviously, I can only imagine how tragic is must be to lose a child. Will suing the restaurant/wrecker service/wrecker driver and the man who's car stalled bring your son back? No. Hancock's father must have some compelling evidence that shows his son was allegedly fed drinks non-stop, then drove into the back of a wrecker whose lights were probably flashing, and the guy whose car broke down. One part of me says you need to take accountability for your actions. Let's start at the restaurant. Just because the bartender is keeping your glass full, doesn't mean you must continue pounding drinks. He's a grown man...29 years-old. Maybe Hancock had an underlying problem? I mean, we all know a guy who can sit there, booze it all night and seem perfectly fine. The toxicology report showed Josh Hancock was almost twice the legal limit.

The other part of me thinks if Hancock was falling off his barstool, slurring speech and still "allegedly" gettting served...then Josh's old man may have a case. I don't see how Mr. Hancock can lay any of the blame on the wrecker company/driver and the guy with the busted ride. Just because the attendant was there 15 minutes doesn't mean the car should've already been moved. I won't even get into the part how police say Hancock wasn't wearing a seatbelt or that the chronic was found in his SUV.

Dragging the lawsuit out won't make the pain go away. Getting a bunch of money from Mike Shannon's Restaurant, the wrecker service/driver and the owner of a broke down car won't bring your son back. So why is Mr. Hancock seeking justice? We shall soon find out.

Stern Gets His Wish, Spurs Win--Hunter Pence Is Good

The Phoenix Suns had Game 5 in their grasp. San Antonio couldn't miss a shot down the stretch. Bruce Bowen did his best imitation of "Big Shot" Bob, nailing a crucial three pointer with less than 30 seconds to go. David Stern, your wish is coming true. Somehow, the NBA's head man has mastered the art of taking the most entertaining series to 7 games. Last year, it was the NBA Finals. Now, it looks like the Spurs and Suns are heading that way.

So I guaranteed a Suns blowout. That was BEFORE Stoudemire and Diaw got suspended for Game 5. Crappy excuse but it's sort of valid. I was wrong for the first time since the last. Now, to the obvious...the NBA must look at how they give out suspensions for players that "leave the bench during an altercation." That's not a groundbreaking thought, but not having Boris and Amare hurt Phoenix.

Are you happy, Stern? The next time your favorite team gets screwed by the commish...you've been "Sterned."

So, Hunter Pence is pretty damn good. Personally, I thought it was a great idea when the Astros brought him up. The team needed a spark and Pence delivered. I vividly remember his first at bat. Probably because he battled and fought off 10-12 pitches and the fans clapped for him when he made an out. I was a little confused but also clapped. Pence has gone 7-7 with two homers in the last two games. I have to think Houston wouldn't be rocking a four game winning streak without him.

Don't look now but Milwaukee is going Milwaukee on us. They've dropped four in a row...I loved how everyone was drinking the Brew Crew's band wagon malt. Is that Beast Light I smell?

Another note: Section 320 @ Minute Maid is my new favorite section. Great view of the whole field, no blind spots and tickets are only $20 a piece.

Astros Need To Start Thinking Trade

The losing bug has taken a strangle hold on the Houston Astros. Everyone hates to watch their team struggle. I'm racking my brain, trying to figure out what in the world the Astros can do to make contact with the ball. Let's see what the guys are batting. I'm scrolling through the Astros batting averages, nothing really jumps off the board at me...EXCEPT Adam Everett is hitting .188, Jason Lane is at .173 and Morgan Ensberg is putting those two to shame with a .216 BA.

Holy Cow! Are you kidding me? It's not like Everett's been a powerhouse throughout his career, but come one! I know, I know, he's not out there to play offense, he's there for defense. That argument's a bunch of crap. What does the Astros organization owe this guy? It's not like he's Roy O, Berkman, Biggio...Everett must have pictures of the head honchos in compromising positions.

Jason Lane hits like a future N.L. batting champ in the cage, but folds like a cheap suit when it counts. Morgan Ensberg...more has been made about that guy's 428 different batting stances and his yellow tinted shades, rather than his play.

Before I break out my "jump to conclusions" mat, check out what the two shortstops at Round Rock are batting. Yes, that's right...125-150 points higher. Everett makes some spectacular plays, but it's time the Astros start thinking trade. Morgan Ensberg, Chris Burke, Adam Everett, Jason Lane...I'm sure you guys are fantastic and crack jokes on road trips to keep everyone laughing, but it's time to go.

The Astros won't get many takers for Ensberg because the team signed him to some big bucks after his great season in '05. Take a look at what these guys make. Who are they going to pick up? Drayton McLane has some pocket change stashed away in his sock drawer after Houston lost the Clemens sweepstakes. We need a bat sooner than later.

Oklahoma Sooners Athletics: Integrity or Negligence?

Here in Texas, I'm sure everyone felt that Oklahoma should've got more punishment than they did over their infractions involving three football players who were paid 17K for work they never did. The NCAA committee that dishes out the 'punishment' is a joke.

Do I think OU should've got more? No. Honestly, I thought the Sooners were going to get hammered. Still, forfeiting all their wins from 2005 is a bit absurd. Here's an interesting scenario from a staff writer at foxsports.com about the situation.

OU has been on the ropes for the last three or four years regarding several of their sports programs. Kelvin Sampson jumped ship to Indiana, leaving the basketball team with problems after he and his staff illegally called recruits almost 600 times.
Both the men's and women's gymnastics teams also have had recent infractions against them by the NCAA.

Is personnel in the Sooner athletic department so busy that they can't keep an eye on what kids are doing? People get paid a lot of money to keep an eye on potential pitfalls for student athletes. These kids already get preferential treatment...I've seen it with my own eyes. Yes, I'm an OU alum and die hard Sooner.

I've seen football players booze it up with WWE announcer 'Cowboy' Jim Ross. Hell, he even bought me a shot, too! Restaurant owners and managers have handed food out with no money ever exchanged, saying "Keep up the good work, if there's anything you need, just come back and see me." I remember it like it was yesterday.

College athletes at places like (enter your alma mater here) are treated like stars. Don't kid yourself, these random acts of kindness happen at EVERY school. I'm glad OU stepped up and took responsibility. If not, their penalty would be much worse.

Top 50 video games

Awesome. It's the top 50 video games of all time! I was just talking with Penix about Spy Hunter. That didn't seem to make the list! But some other classics did.

I remember assassinating Murdock multiple times at Goldeneye on the N64. It was perfect that we played in between our odd work shifts. He just came home from work and I just woke up to go to work. That means he was half asleep and I was ready to get my spy mission on! We had a few hours in between to kill.

Being a doctor or a lawyer ain't what it used to be

The New York Times has an interesting article on doctors and lawyers and how those in these prestigious professions feel they are starting to lose out:

Make no mistake, law and medicine — the most elite of the traditional professions — have always been demanding. But they were also unquestionably prestigious. Sure, bankers made big money and professors held impressive degrees.

But in the days when a successful career was built on a number of tacitly recognized pillars — outsize pay, long-term security, impressive schooling and authority over grave matters — doctors and lawyers were perched atop them all.

Now, those pillars have started to wobble.

“The older professions are great, they’re wonderful,” said Richard Florida, the author of “The Rise of the Creative Class: And How It’s Transforming Work, Leisure, Community and Everyday Life” (Basic Books, 2003). “But they’ve lost their allure, their status. And it isn’t about money.”

Team goes hardcore in Michael Vick promotion

The minor league baseball team in Leavenworth, Kansas has a new neighbor - Michael Vick. He is in the prison down the road. Someone in the team's office thought the only obvious thing...it's tie-in promotion time!

They will include the T-Bones’ game jerseys from that night, which will be the old-style, black-and-white prison stripes. The visiting team, the Gary Southshore RailCats, will wear the orange jumpsuit tops.

“They couldn’t wear the whole jumpsuit,” said T-Bones promotions director Colin Aldrich, “because that would restrict movement.”

The night also will include spotlights and escapee sirens.

[snip]

Players will be encouraged to act along and at least enter the field in shackles. Naturally, “Who Let the Dogs Out” will blare from the stadium speakers.

By the way, there were a few more ideas for the night that didn’t quite work out. One was lining the inside of the stadium with barbed wire to resemble a prison yard. Another was to have the players enter the field in a paddy wagon. There was also talk of having some attack dogs rip apart a dummy with a Vick jersey on it.

Back From My Weekend Trip...Astros Still Struggling

First off, let me say that Kansas City was a nice change of pace from Houston. My girlfriend and I owed one of my best friends a return trip. He came down a couple of years ago and we treated him to a great time. I tried to keep up with the Astros but all I got was "Baseball Tonight" highlights on ESPN. I wasn't missing much...the bullpen is still in disarray and the fellas can't seem to get a clutch hit when men are in scoring position.

Kansas City is a great football town with a baseball problem. I might be biased because I'm a diehard Chiefs fan and have been to Arrowhead 15-20 times. (Can't wait for September 9th at Reliant!)

Talking to locals, I really feel for the Royals...my Astros hat sparked a few conversations. Talk about a team who just can't seem to catch a break. Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye, Carlos Beltran...just think if the Royals would've held on to those guys?

If you ever do make the trek I highly recommend Gates BBQ and Arthur Bryant's BBQ. I've tried all the places people have mentioned here in Houston but no barbecue around these parts can hold a candle. Feel free to argue, but whens the last time you looked at a rack of ribs and they just fell off the bone? George Brett's on the Plaza is solid, too. I gained five freakin' pounds this weekend!

Now to the Astros and Brewers. Wandy Rodriguez stayed in one too many innings. I realize Luke Scott's error opened the flood gates in the sixth, but I could sense a beat down was on the horizon. I can't understand for the life of me why they even give Rick White a uniform. Someone needs to repo his clubhouse pass and gate card after the way he's performed since coming off the D.L. If I performed at work like that guy, I'd be looking for a new job. Phil Garner continues to plug him in but what choice does he have? Any of the middle relievers/closers are guaranteed to blow up.

Phil plays pitcher roulette betting everything on red...too bad he's landing on black. It's not just pitching, though. Hitters must put the ball in play. Carlos Lee and Luke Scott had good nights at the plate...that's it. I wonder if the team will start playing better once Craig Biggio eclipses 3,000?

I guess I do have something in common with Royals fans after all.

Bryant Gumbel Leaves the NFL Network...Miguel Tejada's Real Age

I realize it's old news, but when I read this, I was ELATED! The reason why I waited a week to comment on Bryant Gumbel's departure from the NFL Network booth? I wanted to give him time to change his mind and say he was coming back. So far, so good. Gumbel's play-by-play prowess was terrible, at best. Someone never told him it wasn't the Today Show or HBO's Real Sports...the man never showed any emotion for crying out loud! Analyst and former NFL wide receiver Chris Collinsworth carried Gumbel through each broadcast. Some of you who don't have the NFL Network have no idea what I'm talking about, but trust me, he was awful and the world is a better place. Gumbel should have studied his brother's work, instead he thought 'boring' was good enough.

Astros SS Miguel Tejada recently walked away in the middle of his interview on ESPN's program E:60 when asked about his real age. Tejada claimed he was 31...but his birth certificate says he's 33 years-old. None of this would be that big of a deal if Tejada's name wasn't littered in MLB's Mitchell report. To me, it makes him look like he's hiding something. Here's what I don't find very amusing about E:60's reporting tactics. Tejada was blindsided with the questions about his real age. Miguel was told there were going to be a few final questions about steroids, when in fact, he was peppered with "Miguel, are you really 31?" Intereviewers usually give a PR guy a list of questions that they're going to ask during a sit down interview. E:60 may have stepped over the line with their curve ball.

I don't feel bad for Tejada, he should have just owned it and said, "Yes, I'm really 33." I do think the Astros organization and MLB have some explaining to do. How many players out there are older than they claim? Both parties knew Tejada was older. The Astros squeaky clean reputation has taken a hit with Clemens, Pettitte and now Tejada.

Mooyah burgers: Memorable name, better burger

WAL76 Smiling Hamburger Embossed Coin Bag WalletIf you venture to the south to a land known as Pearland in the Houston area, there is a magical place called Mooyah. A fantastical place filled with giant cheeseburgers and fries.

OK enough with the fairy tale imagery. Mooyah in Pearland is one hell of a burger. No wizardry needed. I went a couple of months ago from the suggestion of Michael Penix and have already started to get the word out.

Mooyah burgers are made to order while you wait. And I waited, but it was worth every minute I sat there and avoided making eye contact with other customers. These suckers are big and juicy and probably not that healthy but you will not think about your heart or the preventative measures of Obamacare while you down one of these. You also get to select all the toppings when you order. Toppings aren't forced on you or sitting there going bad in a salad bar like environment after you pick up the burger at the counter.

The fries were good too. Maybe not Whataburger level, but still good.

If you are hamburger connoisseur like myself, do yourself a treat and get down to Pearland, Katy (Cinco Ranch area) or Webster because these are the only Mooyah franchises in the Houston area. This looks to be a Texas franchise which I expect to expand quickly based on the taste.

I understand Mooyah is a bit like Five Guys Burgers and Fries which I have not been to yet. Now you are thinking I've lost all credibility as a hamburger connoisseur because I have not experienced Five Guys yet (Michael Scott adds, "That's what she said!").
