Jacob Rascon leaving ABC13 Houston

Jacob Rascon announced he is leaving the ABC13 KTRK Houston morning newscast on Friday, December 13, 2024. This could be unlucky or very lucky since he is on channel 13!

UPDATE:  Courtney Fischer is also leaving.

Here is the email Rascon sent to his ABC13 colleagues:

"My first week here, Crystal told me 'that was the best cut-in I’ve ever seen' after I missed a cut-in. And it was all downhill from there.  Thank you Crystal for always giving gentle correction with a smile. Angie is really good at that, too! Happy disgruntled director’s day, Mike! Esther can always solve a problem in 2.7 seconds. Nobody holds meetings or writes emails like Brittaney!

Nobody celebrates special days or goes off script like Elita! Thanks Rick for celebrating the special days we didn’t know existed. Thank you Rita for helping me keep up my Spanish and my energy! 'We could never be friends in real life,' Samica once told me. I’d like to point out that you were wrong.

Thanks for the movie suggestions and honest feedback, Brandon. Thank you for sharing your faith, Lynn! And Cassie! I don’t care what anyone says about you, Jerry, you’re hilarious. On Tuesdays. Great show, Ben. Except for everything you wrote! Thanks for letting me be your favorite anchor, Eric.

Who's going to scare you now, Jaime? Is there anything Doug can’t do? Amna will win an academy award someday. Thanks for being a friend, Mesha. I’m sorry for mixing you up three times, Courtneys. I think everyone should know that Charly’s New Year’s resolution this year is 'keep being awesome.'

Scott and Angel have the best office and they love visitors. I don’t know what Briana loves more, the 8am show or 'dance party with BeyoncĂ©.' Every newscast with Kevin is a good newscast. Thanks for teaching me science, Elyse. Boom goes the thunder or the lightning, Travis?

Thank you Keaton for 'algorithms to live by' and for letting me keep this short as long as I can (thanks Yogi Berra). After all, “silliness is a matter of duration.” On behalf of everyone in the newsroom, thank you Julie for laughing loudly every morning. Finally, a big thank you to Chaz for letting me be your 'fourth favorite Rascon.'"

I hear Rascon will stay in Houston and still be on TV.  Any guesses where he is going?  I have some. Although the people at my hunch station don't seem to know he is on his way yet.  Another case of Mike McGuff knowing before the actual staff?  STAY TUNED!

Oh, and we will see more KTRK departures in December. AGAIN, STAY TUNED RIGHT HERE, as they say on TV news.

Rascon joined ABC13 in January 2022 from anchoring weekend mornings at competitor KPRC 2.  Jacob's first day was the last day for his legendary Live at Five anchor, Art Rascon.  The two made national headlines as they anchored the 11AM newscast together.  No doubt these two are father and son if you see them together!

Since then, the younger Rascon has helped launch the new "First at 4AM" newscast with meteorologist Elita Loresca and co-anchored with Samica Knight and Rita Garcia

I’ve followed Jacob Rascon’s career since he started at KFOX 14 in El Paso. Interestingly, his father, Art Rascon — an El Paso native — also spent part of his career in The Sun City, working for KVIA 7.

Jacob quickly climbed the ranks, moving from El Paso to KNBC 4 in Los Angeles.

Considering his father's CBS national pedigree, it seemed inevitable that Jacob would catch the network's attention. Before long, Jacob joined NBC News as a correspondent.

In 2017, Jacob returned to Texas, likely motivated by a desire to be closer to family. He joined KPRC 2 Houston as a weekend morning anchor and reporter, where he remained until September 2021.
