Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx to host nights on 97.1 The Eagle KEGL

Dallas - Fort Worth radio is getting a new night radio jock and it is Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue. He'll be hosting on the 97.1 The Eagle KEGL:

Motley Crue: A Visual History, 1983-2005Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx broadcasts Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to midnight. Host Nikki Sixx – co-founder/bassist/songwriter of Mötley Crüe and chart-topping band Sixx:A.M., producer, clothing designer, philanthropist, best-selling author and photographer – discusses music and lifestyle topics as he gives listeners a backstage look at the world and mind of a rock star. Joined by co-host Kerri Kasem, Sixx provides his unique perspective and attitude as the duo welcomes celebrity guests, recording artists and fascinating characters from all walks of life. All this and more are coupled with music that rocks The Eagle.

Sixx stated, “After almost 30 years of hearing my music and being interviewed on the radio, I’m excited to finally be behind the mic with Sixx Sense. Together, with Kerri Kasem, I hope to create the best possible radio show with compelling guests, interesting topics and great music.”

“When the opportunity came down to team up with someone as successful at Nikki, we jumped. Everything Nikki does is gold, whether it’s with the Crue or Sixx AM or writing a book or two. We’re looking forward to Nikki bringing D/FW a killer night show with several surprises,” said Chris Ryan, The Eagle’s Program Director.

The show starts on 97.1 The Eagle KEGL February 15. I have not heard where else this syndicated show will go, but it is safe to say that Houston does not have a radio station it fits on at this point. Maybe it will also go on IHeartRadio and I can still listen.

Motley Crue with Aerosmith and the Stones for 2006!

Thanks to Ultimate-Guitar I saw this good piece of news:
Motley Crue will be teaming up with Aerosmith for a co-headlining tour later in the year, Crue frontman Vince Neil revealed during an appearance on the "Opie and Anthony" show on XM Satellite Radio on January 6. In addition, Crue will be playing several European dates with The Rolling Stones over the summer.
Seeing Motley Crue by themselves is quite an experience. I can't imagine that magnified by Steven Tyler's or Mick Jagger's performance afterwards! (It's a safe bet that Motley would be the opener for these two)

I've seen all three bands seperatley a number of times. The last Stones concert I saw at the Toyota Center in late 2005 was amazing. We sat in the middle of the arena and the stage moved out on a track to us. I was five feet from Keith Richards and Mick! I saw Motley in San Antonio last April and that was pretty good too.

VIDEO: Motley Crue's Cruise to Nowhere

We always knew that Motley Crue could be over the top and cheesy, and now we have a video to reaffirm those thoughts. In Motley Cruise to Nowhere, the Crue finds themselves lost at sea in the Bermuda Triangle. What is this KISS? OK dumb question.

Houstonian makes Motley clothes

Motley Crue will be partially dressed by Houstonian Tod Waters

With the cancellation of the Motorhead show in Houston (and Dallas) this weekend, I thought I'd turn our attention to another rock show with an H-Town connection.

Motley Crue is playing the Toyota Center Saturday night on the band's final tour and singer Vince Neil and bassist/band head Nikki Sixx's clothes will be designed by Houstonian Tod Waters of Junker Designs.

"I have been working with Mötley Crüe since the Carnival of Sins tour in 2006 and every tour after," Waters said. "During the Vegas shows Vince had some wild ideas and we experimented with foiling and lights to add shine to that costume. On this tour we tried the same techniques to create the dirty duty look Vince demanded."

Some of Neil's former outfits are now on display at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Cafe in with other Junker costumes.

To get the metal-dystopian look, Waters says he over dyes, paints, mutates, buries, or otherwise ravages each and every edgy, rocker-chic piece.

While the look of heavy guitars and drums most resemble what Waters is known for, he also has made clothes for the likes of Britney Spears and Shakira.

Waters knows what rockers want to wear because deep down inside he is one. His band Spunk was a big part of the 90s Houston music scene as featured in the documentary When We Ruled H-Town.

After working in Los Angeles, for a good decade, Waters is looking to return to his hometown. Good news for Houston rockers or those who just want to look like them.

Fake bands, Motley movies, Metallica and more

The Best Fake Bands Ever
Secret agent chimps, Beatles-esque mop toppers, comic book heroes, heavy metal thunder and Fake-sta rappers. Sometimes the parody ends up better than the real deal.

FINALLY, SOME GOOD NEWS? MOTLEY CRUE’S THE DIRT MOVIE NOT MOVING FORWARD JUST YET
Eventually, someone is going to adapt Motley Crue’s The Dirt (which I’m still fairly certain is the best book ever written in any language ever) into a movie. There’s too many greenbacks at stake for the project just to sit on the shelf forever.

METALLICA's HETFIELD And ULRICH On 25th Anniversary Of 'Kill 'Em All'
Metal Blade Records owner and CEO Brian Slagel recently conducted interviews with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the band's debut album, "Kill 'Em All".

JUDAS PRIEST's 'Nostradamus' Headed For U.S. Top 10 Debut
According to Hits Daily Double (the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS), JUDAS PRIEST's new double-disc concept album, "Nostradamus", is poised to sell around 50,000 copies in the United States during its first week of release for a likely Top 10 debut.

Velvet Revolver, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Motley Crue and more

Could Velvet Revolver open for Led Zeppelin? Are either bands even together? What about Scott Weiland's condition? And what would Slash think about the new Weiland picture with Stone Temple Pilots? This is not the only band with new pictures. Anthrax joins the party too.

Van Halen reschedules tour dates. And I told you that someone would do something with that raw David Lee Roth Runnin' with the Devil vocal track.

What's this REALLY BIG Motley Crue announcement? Is it the official version of this?

Meanwhile Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch doesn't look like it's in good shape.

Just finished Nikki Sixx's Heroin Diaries

As I mentioned before, I have been reading Nikki Sixx's The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star which debuted at the #7 spot on The New York Times Book Review non-fiction best seller list.

Now I am finished and believe it or not, it was a good read. Then again, if you ever read this blog with any regularity you know I am a Motley Crue fan. I don't want to give it away, but a lot of the book deals with Sixx's demons and heroin use. Bet you couldn't tell that from the title?

You learn new stuff about the band like that Nikki and lead singer Vince Neil hated each other through the 80s. No surprise since Vince left or was fired depending on who's side you take. This bit of trivia came out right before the book's release, but we also learn that Dire Straits Money for Nothing is about Motley Crue. And Aerosmith's Dude Looks like a Lady is about Vince Neil. The latter was already out there though.

Don't forget that Slash's biography Slash comes out October 30th. I just bought Everybody Wants Some: The Van Halen Saga by Ian Christie and Howard Kurtz' book Reality Show: Inside the Last Great Television News War. We'll see when I get to all of this.

Which is more amazing? Nikki Sixx's statement about post apocalyptic LA or the fact that MTV did stories on bands?

Record producer spills the beans

We all know that the music business is really full of smoke and mirrors. Not everything is as it appears.

Mikemcguff.com blog reader James B. reminded me how mega-producer Tom Werman (Molly Hatchet, Cheap Trick, Motley Crue, Ted Nugent) is now writing a blog on PopDose and he is telling it all. If you are interested in the music business, his stories are very revealing and worth it.

Two recent posts caught my attention. The first one is on how most live records are partially re-recorded in a studio!:

Live LPs in those days (and I’m sure today, as well) were carefully crafted affairs, designed to sound as if they were recorded at the show, but in actuality fairly worked-over in the studio to repair the mistakes.

Live recordings had tracks for the hall’s public address system and for the audience, to capture the size of the hall and the size and energy of the crowd; because they already carried a record of what happened onstage, we couldn’t depart very much from what was actually played, but if you were careful, you could either correct or completely replace the vocal and guitar tracks. READ THE REST

The next one is about Werman's time with Motley Crue. He says the time he spent with the band wasn't as wild as portrayed in the bio The Dirt. READ IT

A Motley return w/ video

I'm back in the sack. So last Friday we went to the Motley Crue concert at the Toyota Center. Wow. What a show that was. The wife and I saw them in San Antonio last year and the show was way better here - much tighter. You have to love the Houston audiences too.

Mick Mars is looking much better from a year ago while still battling Ankylosing Spondylitis. He did some amazing work with the guitar. I can honestly say I haven't seen playing like that before.

Tommy Lee even passed out bottles of Jäger to the crowd.

I talked with a bouncer at the Mercury Room the next night and he said Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx showed up after the concert. Wonder what happened there?

Ratt fans will be happy to know original drummer Bobby Blotzer was in attendance at the show. He now lives in Houston. Our friends sat next to him and so did blogger John Little.

The chron said Neil's voice was weak, but obviously reviewer Michael D. Clark hadn't seen the Crue or a solo Vince in the last few years. His voice is much better now. In fact, he can actually sing all of the words again.

While this was no 1989 performance (VIDEO: see Dr. Feelgood era performance), it was not too far off for all the years that have passed by since.
