Steve Campion leaves abc13 KTRK

Steve Campion has left abc13 KTRK where he served as the station's first-ever multi-media journalist (MMJ).

And...@SteveABC13 has left the building," tweeted abc13 reporter Miya Shay.  "Steve Campion is one of the best. I’m glad to know he’s not going far, merely to the dark side...of PR!" 

UPDATED: So there you have it, Campion is leaving the TV news biz behind for public relations with Comcast Houston.  Stay tuned for where he is going next.

No doubt, Campion will be remembered for his dogged reporting on the tragic Vanessa Guillen story.

He will also be remembered for his high social media engagement.  I watched him move up the charts back when I tracked such things.

"Listen, I love this guy. I tease him *on the reg* for his 42 selfie posts a day, but really, no one does social media better than THE Steve Campion," joked abc13 reporter Courtney Fischer in a Facebook post.  "I’ll miss the cheesy inspirational quotes accompanied by a sunrise photo. I’ll miss that glass half full, can-do attitude. But mostly, I’ll miss the snark. Congratulations on your next adventure, Campion."

I wanted higher social media engagement, so I started posting selfies and Elon Musk offered to buy my Twitter account to stop me. Guess I have a face for blogging.

Campion arrived at Houston's channel 13 in 2014 from NBC2 News WBBH and ABC7 WZVN Fort Myers, Florida.

Before WBBH, Campion was an MMJ for WCJB/TV20 News Gainesville, FL.

The University of Florida grad interned at WTVJ NBC Miami in 2009.

Heather Sullivan leaves FOX 26 Houston

Heather Sullivan announced her departure from FOX 26 KRIV Houston on Friday morning, mikemcguff.com has learned.

"It was a very hard decision to make. And I want to say, um, I love all of you guys. I mean, I take all of you with me in my heart the friendships I've made here, and also just all of the amazing opportunities that I've had to be able to take Sullivan's smart sense to Fox stations across the country. 

I've been able to create new shows...but I received a wonderful opportunity for a new anchor and consumer reporter position that will be announced soon in another market. 

And so, um, I'm choosing to take on that new adventure, but I take all of the viewers in my heart with me as well, because Houston has been an amazing place to be, and I really cherish my time here and in all of you especially."

Sullivan joined FOX 26 Houston in February 2020 as the station’s consumer reporter, appearing on Houston’s Morning Show and across FOX 26 newscasts. Her Smart Sense reports focus on helping Houston-area families save money and avoid scams, rip-offs, and consumer fraud.

Sullivan arrived at FOX 26 following the retirement of longtime Houston consumer reporter Emily Akin. 

We also learned she has an orange cat.

Prior to her move to Houston, Sullivan worked as a business, consumer, and political reporter at NBC12 WWBT in Richmond, Virginia. She also served as a national consumer correspondent for America Now, a Raycom Media–produced syndicated program, where her investigative consumer reports aired nationwide for four years.

Earlier in her career, Sullivan was a consumer investigative reporter and anchor at WSPA in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, and at WZVN in Fort Myers, Florida. She has also worked as an anchor, reporter, and host in Los Angeles at Ocean County Newschannel, and began her broadcasting career as an anchor and reporter at KVAL Eugene, Oregon.

An Emerson College graduate, Sullivan holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and political communication, along with an MBA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Over the past decade, Sullivan has earned two Emmy Awards and a National Edward R. Murrow Award for her work as an anchor and consumer investigator in Richmond. Her investigations into illegal car sales, home-improvement fraud, and consumer scams earned her the South Carolina Broadcasters Association Reporter of the Year award. She also received a Murrow Award for her consumer product testing series, "Does It Work?" and was twice voted Best Anchor Team by Richmond Magazine.

Rob Evans joins KVUE Austin

Rob Evans is joining the KVUE Austin Daybreak team from THV11 KTHV Little Rock, Arkansas, June 21, 2021.

He leaves the morning news for digital and afternoons

"The people who work and lead the newsroom at KVUE are world-class," Evans said on the KVUE website.  "I’m so excited to learn from them, while sitting next to the incredible Yvonne, working alongside Jason and reuniting with Mariel, whom I worked with in Arkansas."

As Evans noted, meteorologist Mariel Ruiz left the KTHV AM newscast in August of 2019 to join KVUE.

Evans will anchor with Ruiz, Yvonne Nava and Jason Mikell on the Central Texas morning newscast.

Prior to arriving in Little Rock in September 2016, Evans worked for ABC7 WZVN Fort Myers, Florida.  Before that he was at KOLR Springfield, Missouri.

The St. Louis native is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Based on his bios, Evans is a "handyman" and frequently found at hardware stores when he is not with his wife and two kids. 

"What’s exciting about Rob is that he’s not just another anchor who sits at a desk, he’s a reporter at heart," KVUE President and General Manager Kristie Gonzales said on the station's website.  "He believes in getting out in the community, meeting people and telling the stories of Austin." 

Evans takes over for Mike Rush who left KVUE a few months ago and has been a top clicked story on my blog for a long time. 

Where is KVUE's Rob Evans?

I missed several departures from Austin TV in 2025.

First is KVUE anchor Rob Evans, who left in June 2025.

Evans joined the KVUE Daybreak team as a morning co-anchor in June 2021 after arriving from TEGNA sister station THV11 KTHV in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In April 2025, when Bryan Mays returned to the morning newscast, Evans transitioned from Daybreak to anchor Daybreak+ on KVUE+.

Before his time in Little Rock, Evans worked at ABC7 WZVN in Fort Myers, Florida. He previously reported at KOLR in Springfield, Missouri.

A St. Louis native, Evans is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Also leaving KVUE in October 2025 was reporter Isabella Basco, who started with the station in 2023. She joined the LCRA as a Communications Specialist in February 2026.

Over at KXAN Austin, Multimedia Journalist Mercedez Hernandez left the station in August 2025 after three years.

 Forgive me for not posting this news last week when he started, but it got lost in the shuffle with Corey Foley leaving The Bull 100.3 KILT, Casey Curry returning to KTRK abc13 and Katie McCall joining FOX 26.

What makes Campion's hiring so interesting is that he is KTRK's first plunge into the MMJ, one-man band, backpack journalist (whatever your name for it insert here) craze. KTRK is the last Houston station to embrace the inevitable future in this area.

Just in case you don't know what an MMJ or multi-media journalist does, Campion's bio will fill you in, "He prides himself on covering all aspects of a story from shooting, to writing, and editing the pieces."

At least he goes into it with a positive attitude.

Before WBBH, Campion worked as an MMJ for WCJB/TV20 News in Gainesville, FL for a little more than a year. He interned at WTVJ NBC Miami in 2009.

By the way, who else at KTRK has previously worked in Fort Myers? That's right...reporter Pooja Lodhia. Former KTRK reporter Patrick Nolan is a Fort Myers anchor at WFTX.

Speaking of KTRK, I'm getting lots of emails in about new weekend anchor Natasha Barrett. I believe this past weekend was her first time for her to be on her permanent shift.  She started out the week before Easter anchoring the 11am news during the week.

Heather Sullivan will join FOX 26, announced station Vice President and News Director, Susan Schiller. Effective February 2020, she will serve as a consumer reporter for “Houston’s Morning Show” and various station newscasts.

Most recently, Sullivan served as a business, consumer, and political reporter for NBC12 WWBT-TV in Richmond, VA. Prior to that, she was a national consumer correspondent for AMERICA NOW, a product of Raycom Media. Previously, Sullivan held the position of consumer investigative reporter and anchor for WSPA-TV in Greenville, Spartanburg, SC, and, before that, in WZVN-TV in Fort Myers, Fl. She also served as an anchor, reporter and host for Ocean County Newschannel in Los Angeles. Sullivan began her career in broadcasting as an anchor and reporter for KVAL-TV in Eugene, OR.

Sullivan added, "I can't wait to help Houstonians and their families save money, fight scams and rip-offs, and make smarter financial decisions.”
