Houston Film Critics Awards 2025

Houston Film Critics Society

Sinners – Ryan Coogler’s exhilarating exploration of racial tension, music, and vampires – captured top honors from the Houston Film Critics Society in its 19th Annual Awards.

In addition to being named Best Picture of 2025, the Society presented awards to Sinners’ creator Ryan Coogler for Best Director and Screenplay. Michael B. Jordan was named Best Actor for playing twin brothers, and the film was honored for the year’s best Ensemble Cast, Cinematography, Original Music Score, and Casting. The eight wins by Sinners set a new record for the Society's annual citations.

“Sinners’ landmark success should not be seen as an aberration in cinema, but instead remind us that taking creative risks allow for bold filmmaking and new visions,” said Travis Leamons, president of the organization. “As we do each year, the Houston Critics celebrate their favorites and share their enjoyment with readers and listeners alike. It just so happened we really loved horror in 2025.”

The Society selected Jesse Buckley as Best Actress as a wife and mother searching for calm in the face of tragedy in Hamnet. Honored as Best Supporting Actor was Jacob Elordi as a creature navigating an uncertain future in Frankenstein, and as Best Supporting Actress, Amy Madigan as a mysterious aunt in Weapons.

Winning the Texas Independent Film Award – for the best film made in Texas – was the documentary The Librarians, Kim A. Snyder’s non-fiction exploration of efforts to fight book banning in Texas and Florida. Sentimental Value, Joachim Trier’s tribute to family dynamics, was named Best Foreign Language Feature.

“Throughout the year, our Society members keep audiences informed about the range of films available to them in theaters and at home,” Leamons continued. “As professional journalists committed to the movie experience, we are proud to honor this year’s winners.”

Texas Independent Film Award: The Librarians

Five films produced in Texas competed for the prestigious Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) when the Houston Film Critics Society (HFCS).

In 2024, Mike McGuff's documentary "Runaway Radio" won the 2024 TIFA. [WATCH HERE]

The 2025 nominees were:

• Ick: Joseph Kahn’s science fiction tale about a high school teacher who does everything possible to deal with a parasitic alien.

• The Librarians: Kim A. Snyder’s documentary focuses on efforts in Texas, Florida and other states to confront those trying to ban books from schools and libraries.

• Luv Ya Bum: This documentary from David Hartstein, Sam Wainwright Douglas, and Andrew Alden Miller profiles Bum Phillips, head coach of the Houston Oilers during the ‘Luv Ya Blue’ era.

• Selena y Los Dinos: Isabel Castro’s documentary captures what happened behind the scenes as a family supported the career of Selena Quintanilla.

• The Senior: Rod Lurie brings to the screen the story of Mike Flynt, who, at age 59, got a second chance to play college football.

“Each year, it becomes more challenging to select five nominees from the many quality films made in Texas,” says Cary Darling, HFCS member and Arts Editor for the Houston Chronicle. “We continue, in our state, to make significant contributions to what cinema can and will be.”

“For more than 10 years the Texas Independent Film Award has shone a spotlight on the creativity and drive of local filmmaking outside the studio system, celebrating artists who tell bold, personal stories rooted in culture and community,” adds Joshua Starnes, HFCS member and long-time coordinator of the TIFA selection process. “The 2025 nominees stand easily alongside the awards’ previous recipients, showcasing a range of voices working in Texas today from inventive genre filmmaking to intimate documentary. The 2025 nominees affirm Texas’ voice in modern cinema.”

To be nominated for the TIFA, a film must be shot in the Lone Star State and submitted to the Society by October 31, 2025. Members of a select HFCS committee screened the possible nominees before all voting members reviewed them and selected the winner.

“We are proud to salute these three documentaries and two narrative features as they vie to be acknowledged as the best of Texas film of 2025,” says Travis Leamons, President of the Society. “Each year, as more people around the world learn more about making movies in Texas, the opportunities for our filmmakers expand as well as the offerings for audiences.”

The 40 members of the Houston Film Critics Society are working film journalists on television, radio, online, and in traditional print. Together, they reach millions of people each week across the United States with their critiques and commentaries on film. The organization’s mission is to promote the advancement and appreciation of film in the Houston community and beyond. For a list of members, visit www.HoustonFilmCritics.com.

“Faders Up: The John Aielli Experience” documentary out now

“Faders Up: The John Aielli Experience,” a documentary about the legendary KUTX 98.9 Austin morning show host, releases digitally on Tuesday, September 30, across major digital platforms.

WATCH HERE

“During his tenure with KUT and KUTX — more than half a century — the classically trained baritone and his ‘Eklektikos’ show eased the city into a new day, with everything from classical to classic rock,” said the Austin American-Statesman about Aielli. “A beloved Austin character, he was a top fundraiser for the public radio station, as well as a connective force between listeners and community arts organizations.”

Much like my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio," which has a screening on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at River Oaks Theatre, this doc is keeping Texas broadcasting history alive!

Directed and produced by Sam Wainwright Douglas and David Hartstein, the 24 Beats Per Second Audience Award Winner at SXSW 2024, the film features exclusive archival footage, stylized recreations, and heartfelt accolades to a beautifully eccentric and often surreal radio legend who passed away in 2022.

With a career spanning over 50 years on air, the documentary shares the life of the “Eklektikos” host both in and out of the studio, using a collage format that reflects Aielli’s eclectic style.

“Faders Up: The John Aielli Experience” serves as a poignant tribute to a true radio legend, honoring his lasting impact on both Austin and the medium of radio. Some listeners loved Aielli’s show, some hated it, but all were captivated by his programming. Spending up to six hours a day on air, Aielli would keep audiences on their toes with interviews, music he was interested in that day, live performances, offbeat observations and sometimes dead air. His soothing, calm voice was almost melodic at times, and was one of his most recognizable traits.

In praise of the film, Academy Award-nominated director Richard Linklater wrote, "One of the great Austin films...a really wonderful, fun, intimate piece about a pretty mysterious guy. Anyone hoping to understand Austin of the last 60 years should just start with FADERS UP."

“We loved his unique stream of conscious approach to radio, and John was such a window into the local culture,” said co-director Sam Wainwright Douglas. “Not being Austin natives, John was very much an entry point to life here. The people here are curious, and that makes the culture vibrant and fosters creativity and collaboration. With a combination like that, I hope we’re always weird here in Austin.”

“We've been in love and obsessed with John since first hearing his unique voice almost 25 years ago. By that point, he'd already played such an important role in the artistic landscape of this city,” said co-director David Hartstein. “To be able to bring that to light in the movie and demonstrate John's contribution to the open, tolerant Austin of today feels like a fitting tribute.”

“John Aielli was such a part of the fabric of Austin that we felt like his story needed to be told,” said KUT/KUTX Programming Director Matt Reilly. “Over his 50-year career, John did his part to shape Austin’s personality without intentionally doing so. It’s such an amazing story. I’ve known Sam and David for several years and always been a big fan of their work. Not only are they great storytellers but have a great visual sensibility. It seemed natural that they should tell John’s story. I know we’re all in for a treat.”

The official release platforms are Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Google Play, YouTube and Fandango At Home.

It's a mikemcguff blog 20 year celebration!

Jennifer Reyna & Mike McGuff
Jennifer Reyna and Mike McGuff

When I started writing this blog in October 2005, I thought it might last a few months.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would last 20 years.

And believe it or not, we have two events to celebrate the two-decade achievement.

I'm holding a screening of my 101 KLOL Houston documentary "Runaway Radio" at the legendary River Oaks Theatre on October 1, 2025, at 7:15 pm with the reunited Jennifer Reyna and Outlaw Dave.

Michael Garfield, “The High Tech Texan,” serves as event host.

BUY TICKETS

Notice the date? October 1st is 10-1, like the radio dial position of 101 FM! I wish I had come up with that, but the credit goes to Rob Saucedo, the Artistic Director at River Oaks Theatre!

Houston Matters with Craig Cohen on Houston Public Media just aired an interview with me about the documentary this morning!

Obviously, readers of this blog will recognize Reyna as KHOU 11 Houston morning traffic anchor and Outlaw Dave as morning show host for Houston’s Eagle 106.9 and 107.5 KHPT/KGLK. Reyna started her broadcasting career on Dave's afternoon 101 KLOL show!

In honor of Mark Stevens, my mom and Dayna Steele's mother, we will be collecting funds for the Alzheimer’s Association Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter. Even if you don't attend the screening, you can donate here.

Since our last screening, “Runaway Radio” won the prestigious Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) – for the best film made in Texas – at the Houston Film Critics Society’s 18th Annual Awards. A special ceremony will be held in honor of the occasion at the River Oaks Theatre screening.  Previous TIFA winners include Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10-1/2: A Space Age Childhood and Sean Baker’s Red Rocket.

"Runaway Radio" features interviews with Dusty Hill (ZZ Top), Lyle Lovett, Sammy Hagar (Solo, Van Halen, Montrose, The Circle), Melissa Etheridge (singer-songwriter), Doug Pinnick (King’s X, KXM) and Carmine Appice (Ozzy Osbourne, Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, King Kobra) and the KLOL crew.

The night before

To kick the party off early, the night before on Tuesday, September 30, at 7:30, I will also be at a special screening of The Gardener's Year at the River Oaks Theatre. BUY TICKETS HERE

“Runaway Radio” wins Houston Film Critics Society award!

Houston Film Critics Society awards

I am happy to report that my 101 KLOL documentary, "Runaway Radio," won a Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) for the best film made in Texas in the 18th annual Houston Film Critics Society awards!

Previous Texas Independent Film Award winners include Richard Linklater for Apollo 10-1/2: A Space Age Childhood and Sean Baker for Red Rocket.

Hey, I'm just as surprised as you! See, kids, there is a light at the end of the tunnel after devoting 14 years of your life to something. LOL!

I used to get messages online saying, "This film is never coming out!" People in real would tell me the same. And I'll be honest, there were times even I thought it would never come out.

But thanks to everyone involved for helping me cross the very long finish line. It was very much a team effort! Go to Tubi, and you can see the long list of credits because so many people made a big difference that I don't want to leave anyone out here!

People ask me how my wife put up with this.  I told Dayna Steele in her podcast that my wife said she would have been upset with the length of production time if the movie had sucked.

The Houston Film Critics Society is comprised of 38 members who work as film journalists on television, radio, online, and traditional print. Their critiques and commentaries on film reach millions of people each week across the United States. The organization’s mission is to promote the advancement and appreciation of film in the Houston community and beyond.

You can watch "Runaway Radio" via VOD, Tubi, or DVD (in Houston, buy in person at Cactus Music!).

Texas TV, radio and media gifts

Runaway Radio on DVD

The holidays are almost upon us, so what are some quick gifts you can buy on Amazon related to Texas TV, radio, or media in general?

Now, this idea didn't happen to pop into my head just because my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" is now on DVD and would make a perfect Christmas gift. It is available on Amazon, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble websites.

No, I thought about the Texas television anchors, reporters, meteorologists, and other journalists who have worked hard on a labor of love like your favorite lowly Texas media blogger did with his 14 year in the making film.

This list is taken from books I have received releases from over the years, with a few bonus ones from before my blog existed. To show you how hard it is to be an author, some of the books I have featured over the years are no longer available.

Here are some Texas media gift options from Houston to Dallas to Austin to El Paso and surrounding areas in the Lone Star State!

The Texas Radio Hall of Fame (TRHOF) inducted its new batch of members at the Texas Broadcast Museum in Kilgore the first weekend of November 2024.

The Friday night before the big induction ceremony, the radio greats were treated to a special screening of my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio!"  On stage for a terrific doc Q&A were 2024 inductee Jay Jones (former KLOL owner), members Dayna Steele and Doug Harris, and me, your favorite media blogger/director.

Fun fact, some "Runaway Radio" scenes were shot at the Texas Broadcast Museum so it was super cool to actually show the film there! If you love broadcasting, the museum is worth the drive!

Mister McKinney's Historic Houston and ABC7 KABC Los Angeles president and general manager Wendy Granato were seen in the crowd for the Houston radio film.

You can watch "Runaway Radio" on VOD / Tubi or DVD.

On Saturday, Hall of Famer Scott Arthur kicked off the ceremony with the induction of San Antonio's Jud Ashmore, who had just celebrated his 100th birthday.

Hall of Famer Steele returned to the stage to welcome Mary McCoy, holder of the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest career as a female radio personality (72 years!), and nine-year-old Mary Ella Woodstock, host of KIDZ STAR Radio on DFW's KNON-NOW.

Texas Association of Broadcasters president Oscar Rodriguez provided a legislative update, and THROF Executive Director Josh Holstead touted the organization's scholarship program.

TRHOF Executive Director Doug Harris noted that the Induction ceremony was sold out for the third consecutive year. As a result, the event will again be held in Kilgore on November 7-8, 2025.

River Oaks Theatre "Runaway Radio" screening

I was on cloud nine or maybe cloud 101 last week during and after the River Oaks Theatre screening of my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" to a near sell-out of the 249-seat big screen room!

Much of my life, going back to 1994, when I saw the first run of Kevin Smith's 'Clerks' has been spent in this iconic Houston film theater.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to watch a film about a Houston institution inside a Houston institution! From what I understand, KLOL offered listeners a one-dollar and one-cent price deal to see the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show back in the day.

VIPs attending the "Runaway Radio" screening and cast Q&A included Texas State Senator Carol Alvarado and former 104.1 KRBE morning show host Maria Todd.

What's cool is that "Runaway Radio" is one of the first films to play in the newly reopened classic theater since it opened the door in October.

Dayna Steele, Lanny Griffith, Brian Shannon from Stevens & Pruett, Grego, Pat Fant, Doug Harris, Dr. Betty Halpern, Jay Jones, and director Mike McGuff all took the stage, with Michael Garfield, the "High Tech Texan" as the host.

“My very first ‘date’ was Brett Closs’ 7th birthday party with my crush Dale Clark, and we all went to see Fantasia at the River Oaks Theatre,” Steele said.

FavoriteRadioShirts.com even gave away new 101 KLOL t-shirts!

Jennifer Reyna returns to KHOU 11

Jennifer Reyna

Jennifer Reyna returned to her KHOU 11 morning anchor traffic duties on September 10, 2024, after a few weeks away.

"Long story short, I had a severe shoulder issue that forced me to sit out. Better now," Reyna posted.

Clearly, Channel 11 viewers missed Reyna since my email boxes were filling up with questions about her whereabouts!

Even when Reyna is not on your TV screens, you can watch her anytime on my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" now streaming on Tubi and other platforms.

You can also watch her in the doc on DVD.

If you are a hardcore Reyna fan, you should see her on the big silver screen as she and the film will be screening at the River Oaks Theater (just announced), Alta Arts, and the Texas Radio Hall of Fame ceremony weekend! Get your tickets now! You owe it to Jennifer for bringing reliable traffic reporting to you all these years...just kidding. But you do kinda owe it to me for bringing you Houston media news without a paywall all these years, too!

Which other Houston television anchor is also in a film?

Today is when 101 KLOL Houston signed on the air in 1970

101 KLOL sign-on day

August 7th, 1970 is the day that 101 KLOL signed on the air!

And no one back then thought a KLOL called “Runaway Radio” would now be streaming on Tubi in 2024!  They might say, "What's streaming, man? That sounds groovy."  Do you know who else is trying to figure out what streaming is in 2024?  Local TV stations.

Besides streaming, you can catch a screening of “Runaway Radio,” at Alta Arts Houston on October 2, 2024, from 7:30 p.m. to 9. Scheduled to appear in the film’s Q&A session are Dayna Steele, Lanny Griffith, Pat Fant, Doug Harris, and your lowly Texas media blogger film director writing this post.

Deborah Duncan talks "Runaway Radio" with Mike McGuff

I want to thank Deborah Duncan and Ralph Garcia for having me on KHOU 11's Great Day Houston to discuss my new 101 KLOL documentary, Runaway Radio, now available on streaming and DVD!

Seeing how much research the show did going into this nearly 10-minute segment was amazing!

Duncan promised to have me on the show when I finished the doc—all the way back in February 2016! Below is an Instagram post from all those years ago!

And as I posted on Facebook, I even had more of a KTRK reunion when newly hired photographer/editor Vaughan Samples walked through the door to tape the segment!

Watch Mike McGuff's "Runaway Radio" 101 KLOL doc

Since I am not posting this week as I'm in Washington, D.C., why don't you at least kick back and watch my 101 KLOL Houston documentary "Runaway Radio" via Video on Demand (VOD)!

WATCH IT HERE

“With Runaway Radio director Mike McGuff has created a raucous rock and roll documentary about the iconic Houston Album-Oriented-Rock (AOR) radio station 101 KLOL. It started in 1970 as a progressive rock station, where DJs played what they liked. It grew into a national phenomenon that was revered and copied widely.”

    – Bradley Gibson, Film Threat

“‘Runaway Radio,’ a documentary celebrating the wild and woozy heyday of the pioneering local rock radio station KLOL-FM. On the air from 1970 to 2004, KLOL transformed over its life from shaggy, free-form anarchy to loudmouth, shock-jock insanity, all the while providing the guitar-heavy soundtrack for a couple of generations of head-banging Houstonians.”

    – Cary Darling, Houston Chronicle

“Freedom is a theme that comes up frequently in Runaway Radio, a film produced and directed by Houston media blogger Mike McGuff. KLOL broke damn near every rule that had previously governed FM radio, raising a middle finger to local blue noses and keepers of decency for over thirty years. Meantime, KLOL was generating huge ratings and even bigger profits as one of the most successful rock and roll stations in the country. We’re talking powerhouse. The Big Kahuna. King Kong.”

    – Tom Richards, Houston Press

“The writer-director keeps the documentary moving at a swift pace while cramming a substantial amount of information in the 83-minute running time making this a must-see for rock fans.”

    – Joe Friar, Fort Worth Report

Mike McGuff Talks About His Documentary 'Runaway Radio' with FanboyNation

Thanks to R.C. Samo for his interview with me on FanboyNation!

‘Runaway Radio‘ is a documentary with a runtime of just 83 minutes that explores the impact of radio in the pre-digital age, emphasizing the influence of Houston’s 101 KLOL.

The film features insights from renowned musicians like Lyle Lovett and Melissa Etheridge, as well as top radio DJs across the United States. It traces the station’s evolution from a progressive radio station in 1970 to one of several Album Oriented Rock (AOR) stations nationwide.

“Runaway Radio” the 101 KLOL documentary, is now available to rent or buy through major video-on-demand (VOD) platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, VUDU, YouTube, Dish Network, Direct TV, and local cable providers.

Thanks to Craig Cohen and crew for having me on Houston Public Media's "Houston Matters" on News 88.7 KUHF at 9am!

I've been going on this show since it started 10 years ago and telling the staff about this documentary, so you know we finally reached a milestone if I could talk about it on the Houston Matters airwaves!

Stevens and Pruett as Hudson and Harrigan on 610 KILT in 1976 and 1979

Here is rare audio of 101 KLOL's morning show hosts Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett as Hudson and Harrigan on 610 KILT from a 1976 and 1979 aircheck.

You and other Groove Dawgs can learn more about Stevens and Pruett and the rest of Rock 101 KLOL in my "Runaway Radio" documentary, now available on DVD and streaming via video on demand.

The names Hudson and Harrigan were just that, with different radio teams like Stevens and Pruett playing them through the years.

I interviewed Randy Hames, the last and longest-running Irv Harrington, back in 2015 for his book "Houston's Morning Show: The True Story of Hudson & Harrigan."
