Help Mike McGuff fight Alzheimer's disease by doing what you love

Twenty-one years ago today, my mom died of younger-onset Alzheimer's disease.

This year, I'm the executive chair of the Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association's Do What You Love to End ALZ campaign.

Do What You Love gives you the flexibility to do whatever it is you want to fight Alzheimer's disease.

For example, I kicked off the campaign event in October with a screening of my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" at the legendary River Oaks Theatre, featuring Outlaw Dave and Jennifer Reyna, with host Michael Garfield.  

Here are some suggestions to help get your ideas flowing!

FUNDRAISE ONLY
> Use social media and your following to raise money.

EXERCISE
> From challenges to an outing on a scenic trail, there are plenty of ways to turn exercise into an enjoyable fundraiser!

SPORTS
> Bring friends, family, and colleagues together by organizing a tennis or golf tournament with registration fees that benefit the cause.

GAMES
> Pick your favorite game, like bridge, board games, Mah Jongg, or livestreaming, and turn it into a fundraiser.

PARTIES & EVENTS
> Organize a costume or dance party to raise funds to advance the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

ARTS
> Host a karaoke night, knit-a-thon or an art auction. There’s no limit to what you can do!

HOBBIES
> Bake cookies for your family or office in exchange for a donation, or host a fishing competition with an entry fee.

OTHER
> A graduation, holiday, or other celebration can make for a special fundraiser. Set up a fundraising page and ask friends and family to make donations in lieu of gifts.

This is not limited to individuals.  Businesses such as restaurants, all the way to entertainment venues, like escape rooms, can participate.

Dementia is a growing public health crisis in Texas. The impact of Alzheimer’s is projected to rise, according to recent data:

 

- 459,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in Texas.

- 1.1 million family caregivers bear the burden of the disease in Texas.

- $4.3 billion is the cost of Alzheimer’s to the state Medicaid program.

Your dollars make a difference. Funding has helped fight the disease's side effects with recent advances. Although current medications cannot cure Alzheimer’s, some drugs change disease progression, with benefits to cognition and function. Other medicines may help lessen symptoms, such as memory loss and confusion, for a limited time.

Also, the Alzheimer's Association U.S. POINTER study recently found that healthy lifestyle interventions, such as diet, exercise, and cognitive engagement, have a powerful impact on brain health and can improve cognitive function, helping protect cognition from normal age-related decline.

When I started writing this blog in October 2005, I thought it might last a few months.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would last 20 years.

And believe it or not, we have two events to celebrate the two-decade achievement.

Houston Matters with Craig Cohen on Houston Public Media just aired an interview with me about the documentary this morning!

Obviously, readers of this blog will recognize Reyna as KHOU 11 Houston morning traffic anchor and Outlaw Dave as morning show host for Houston’s Eagle 106.9 and 107.5 KHPT/KGLK. Reyna started her broadcasting career on Dave's afternoon 101 KLOL show!

“Runaway Radio” wins Houston Film Critics Society award!

I am happy to report that my 101 KLOL documentary, "Runaway Radio," won a Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) for the best film made in Texas in the 18th annual Houston Film Critics Society awards!

Previous Texas Independent Film Award winners include Richard Linklater for Apollo 10-1/2: A Space Age Childhood and Sean Baker for Red Rocket.

Hey, I'm just as surprised as you! See, kids, there is a light at the end of the tunnel after devoting 14 years of your life to something. LOL!

I used to get messages online saying, "This film is never coming out!" People in real would tell me the same. And I'll be honest, there were times even I thought it would never come out.  

But thanks to everyone involved for helping me cross the very long finish line. It was very much a team effort! Go to Tubi, and you can see the long list of credits because so many people made a big difference that I don't want to leave anyone out here!

People ask me how my wife put up with this.  I told Dayna Steele in her podcast that my wife said she would have been upset with the length of production time if the movie had sucked.  

The Houston Film Critics Society is comprised of 38 members who work as film journalists on television, radio, online, and traditional print. Their critiques and commentaries on film reach millions of people each week across the United States. The organization’s mission is to promote the advancement and appreciation of film in the Houston community and beyond.

River Oaks Theatre "Runaway Radio" screening

I was on cloud nine or maybe cloud 101 last week during and after the River Oaks Theatre screening of my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" to a near sell-out of the 249-seat big screen room!

Much of my life, going back to 1994, when I saw the first run of Kevin Smith's 'Clerks' has been spent in this iconic Houston film theater.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to watch a film about a Houston institution inside a Houston institution! From what I understand, KLOL offered listeners a one-dollar and one-cent price deal to see the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show back in the day. 

VIPs attending the "Runaway Radio" screening and cast Q&A included Texas State Senator Carol Alvarado and former 104.1 KRBE morning show host Maria Todd.

What's cool is that "Runaway Radio" is one of the first films to play in the newly reopened classic theater since it opened the door in October. 

Dayna Steele, Lanny Griffith, Brian Shannon from Stevens & Pruett, Grego, Pat Fant, Doug Harris, Dr. Betty Halpern, Jay Jones, and director Mike McGuff all took the stage, with Michael Garfield, the "High Tech Texan" as the host.

“My very first ‘date’ was Brett Closs’ 7th birthday party with my crush Dale Clark, and we all went to see Fantasia at the River Oaks Theatre,” Steele said.

Deborah Duncan talks "Runaway Radio" with Mike McGuff

I want to thank Deborah Duncan and Ralph Garcia for having me on KHOU 11's Great Day Houston to discuss my new 101 KLOL documentary, Runaway Radio, now available on streaming and DVD!

Seeing how much research the show did going into this nearly 10-minute segment was amazing!

Thanks to the Houston Chronicle arts and entertainment editor Cary Darling for exclusively breaking the news on the 2024 release of my upcoming 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio."

Dayna Steele interviews Mike McGuff about his mom's Alzheimer's battle

Mike McGuff lost his mother to early-onset Alzheimer's in his 20s. Dayna Steele and Mike talk about what that was like for a young man just starting a promising career and how it changed him and his life on the other side of this journey.

McGuff is a Houston/Southeast Texas Alzheimer's Association board member and the 7th Congressional District of Texas Alzheimer's Ambassador.  

Professionally he is a Houston digital marketer, blogger, and documentary filmmaker whose first film, "Runaway Radio," a documentary about 101 KLOL (the rock radio station Dayna was on), is currently playing film festivals.

The mikemcguff.com blog is 15 years old, plus I'm going on a blogging break 

As noted earlier, this week is the 15th anniversary of the mikemcguff.com (can't believe I am writing that statement).

Thanks for reading all of these years and helping me guide the coverage.  

I didn't name it the Houston TV blog or anything like that originally because it wasn't about TV in 2005 or even the immediate years after that.  Back then, it was my personal blog about Houston news that wouldn't make the mainstream media, technology news, music or whatever I found interesting at the moment.

Since I somewhat knew the broadcast media biz, the posts I started writing about TV or radio really started to take off. Hence, what you have today for better or worse.

Believe it or not, I even had a podcast back in 2006 tied to the blog!

Blogging pros would tell you I made a big mistake staying on the free blogger platform all these years.  What I got was blogging with no monthly hosting bills to pay and less technical hassles.  What I gave up was the pro look of a WordPress site that advertisers and marketers would be more interested in advertising on.  

But the contrarian in me loves the fact that I (with the help of my readers) have already reached nearly 1.2 million unique pageviews readers in 2020 on a free blogger.com blog!

I really appreciate how some readers get mad when I take a blogging break, but that is what is happening now. People who are celebrating...TV news managers.

If there is some major Houston or Texas media breaking news story, then by all means, contact me. I'll come back for that.

The story aired at 10pm last night. I actually did not see it live on the air because I was still on a plane coming in from my trip meeting with the staffs of the Houston-area Congressional offices.
