KXAS 5 imports Rick Mitchell from KOCO

Meteorologist Rick Mitchell has been at Oklahoma City's KOCO forever. Now he is crossing the border to Texas and landing at KXAS 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.

"I'm moving to Dallas," Mitchell said on Twitter. "It was the toughest decision of my life. The last 18 yrs in OK have been wonderful."

According to his bio, the University of Nebraska grad worked at Accu-Weather, WOI in Des Moines and arrived at KOCO in 1994 where he has been the chief meteorologist.

"I've been honored to have you as my viewers for the last 18 yrs," Mitchell added. "My last day will be Aug 20."

TVSpy reports that Mitchell is going to replace morning meteorologist Jennifer Lopez who left the NBC station earlier this year. Has the other Jennifer Lopez left American Idol yet? Oh wait, I don't care. Glad to see Steven Tyler off that show though. Looking forward to the new hopefully old-school Aerosmith album.

UPDATE from KXAS NBC5
Mitchell’s day-to-day responsibilities and his on-air start date at NBC 5 will be announced in the coming weeks. He fills a position left vacant when meteorologist Jennifer Lopez left the NBC 5 weather team earlier this year.

He has been recognized for his severe weather forecasting experiences from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press. Mitchell’s team of meteorologists at KOCO-TV was also recognized by then Oklahoma governor, Frank Keating, for their exceptional work covering tornados in May 1999.
