I was sitting at the doctor's office Wednesday morning scanning through my phone when I saw the surprising news that HISD Press Secretary Norm Uhl had been let go from the school district. Then the emails started coming in about it.
I had the chance to work with Uhl when I was at KTRK 13 and KIAH 39. He was one of the best Public Information Officers (PIOs) to deal with in Houston. That media friendly demeanor won him praise and awards too.
Naturally Uhl was good at dealing with reporters since he had served as one at KHOU 11 in the past. He knew what journalists needed.
Beyond that, Uhl has soul. Go watch him play in his band Brother 2 Brother to find out. I even wrote a profile on Uhl's music life for the Examiner newspaper group in 2009.
Uhl is not the only former journalist to leave HISD HQ (what used to be called the Taj Mahal in the old building on Richmond) this year. I told you last April how HISD Senior Media Relations Specialist/Spokesperson Rebecca Suarez returned to television as an anchor at Univision 45 KXLN.
Good luck to Uhl. We'll see him dealing with the media soon somewhere else I have a feeling.
