Here is more from the El Paso Times Media Blog:
Charlie Bernal, a KDBC-TV (CBS Ch.4) live truck operator, has told the news media Web site NewsBlues that he lost his job after he participated in a drag race with another live truck, belonging to KVIA-TV (ABC Ch.7). "I'm glad everyone enjoyed that one," wrote Bernal in an e-mail to the Web site. The drag race happened last Friday while both stations were covering the opening of the new El Paso Sand Drags & Raceway in the Lower Valley. According to witnessess, the drivers were egged-on by the large crowd gathered for a night of drag racing and fun. The TV stations were actually there to report on a larger story related to a death that occurred the night before when one of two cars racing on Interstate 10 collided with a third car. KDBC-TV officials did not comment on Bernal's dismissal. Nor is it known whether the driver of the KVIA truck got into trouble over the incident. The KVIA reporter working the story was newly-annointed prime-time anchor Rick Cabrera.
