Kids these days...they don't have an attention span because they are too busy multi-tasking.
But at the same time, they don't watch TV, they don't listen to the radio, they don't read the newspaper, they don't play Atari, they don't talk on the phone, they don't eat apple pies, they don't walk dogs, they don't do this, they don't do that...etc. (OK, maybe that is a little overboard but that's all you hear these days.)
If they aren't doing all of these activities, what the heck are they multi-tasking? That's just me asking a question out loud, you can answer in the comments section.
So to make sure Clerks II has some rear ends in theater seats, Kevin Smith is hitting YouTube to promote the upcoming sequel:
Part 1
Part 2
Both parts NSFW.
These clips are filled with interviews and behind the scenes shots. They are like an electronic press kit for the web/new-MTV generation. Play a hit song, cut the shots fast and you're done.
It must be working. Thousands of people are watching them. Especially Part 2, where Smith makes fun of the YouTube generation.
Why doesn't local TV news do something like this? Worried about copyrights? Respectability? The sheer thought about using the Internet in a new way?
But do you want to reach this audience? There has to be some balance.
Is this audience ultimately even desirable for TV news?
It's not the meaning of life I worry about - it's these questions.
