2025 Houston Celebrity Dairy Goat Milking Contest

After two decades of competing, Johnny “Bravo” Holloway (formerly of 104.1 KRBE/89.3 KSBJ) claimed the 2025 Grand Champion title of the Celebrity Dairy Goat Milking Contest at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“The secret to getting the most milk? Warm hands,” Holloway revealed.

I participated in this contest in 2014 and just as Holloway says, the experts kept telling me to keep my hands warm. It was at this point that as a Texas media blogger, I realized that only ice is running through my veins and the Sheep and Goat Committee never invited me back again.  That and they might not have liked the fact that I brought a crew with me to stick a camera and microphone in the faces of the media celebrities to ask such probing questions as what is your milking secret. That's why at the HLSR they call me Ted Cowpel. Get it, instead of Koppel...never mind.

While I didn't come close to winning, the contest gave me an opportunity to ask Outlaw Dave in person to be in my 101 KLOL documentary that would be titled many years later "Runaway Radio."

Katelyn Maida of 93Q KKBQ Houston's "Riggs, Katelyn, and Erica – The Q Morning Show," secured the Reserve Champion title.

“This is a proud moment,” Maida said. “I’ll be back for that number one spot next year.”

While I don't have a full list of contestants, KHOU 11 Houston said its reporters Julissa Garza and Anayeli Ruiz were showcasing their goat-milking skills.

KPRC 2 "Houston Life" co-host Tessa Barrera once again hosted the event.

The dairy goats featured in the contest are provided through a partnership with Prairie View A&M University and their livestock show team.

Trinity Wilson, a freshman at Prairie View A&M and a member of the livestock show team, helps care for the goats year-round. She and her team are responsible for feeding, milking, and training the goats seven days a week.

“This event gives us a chance to showcase our goats to the public,” Wilson said.

Nicole Sergent, an eight-year member of the Sheep and Goat Committee, looks forward to the contest each year.

“It’s a fun way for people to see agriculture in action,” Sergent said. “They tune in because their favorite radio host, influencer, or news anchor is competing, and in the process, we introduce agriculture to a whole new audience.”
