Def Leppard, Poison, Cheap Trick at Houston's Woodlands Pavillion (8/19/09)

Still making up for the two years I worked nights at 13 and missed all concerts coming to Houston, I saw Def Leppard, Poison and heard Cheap Trick Wednesday night at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The great thing was our seats were close enough to the stage to feel Poison's pyro and smell Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen's incense he was burning.

This was my first Def Leppard live experience. It was a good one. Great multi-leveled stage made of video screens. Def Leppard can play live, that's for sure. Our seats were right in front of the speakers and I could literally feel Rick Savage's bass. And let me tell you the hits kept coming. I was told to 'Rock Rock Till You Drop' from the get go and that is what I did. The band played at least one song from new effort Songs From The Sparkle Lounge, but the rest of the night's musical selections were from the vault. No High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night) though. We were on the side of the stage with guitarist Phil Collen.

Poison put on a typical Poison show. They are good entertainers. Mr. SunCaughtFire, who is a musician and attended the show with me, said they need to practice their instruments more often. Although we both agreed that Poison is not a band a lot of groups would want to open for them. They know how to pump up the crowd and wear them down a bit. We were on the side of the stage with bassist Bobby Dall.

You might remember how I said that the Pavilion has been seriously revamped since Hurricane Ike ripped it apart last year. Well, part of the improvements were in the audio system. We were walking up to the venue and could hear Cheap Trick very clearly. They sounded great and so did the sound outside. Why am I paying for a ticket?

After going to these types of shows for a while, it is obvious to see the audience has shifted.  Lots of younger folk who probably were exposed to this rock from Guitar Hero or Rock Band.
