Nexstar lays off 2% of staff, including at CW39 Houston

CW39 Houston

Wednesday, the media trades announced that Nexstar Media Group was cutting 2% of its total workforce, including two CW39 Houston KIAH employees, sources tell mikemcguff.com.

Nexstar is one of the biggest owners of local TV stations, with 13,000 employees across 116 markets. These cuts equate to around 260 employees nationwide.

“Our broadcasting and sales divisions are streamlining their organizations to reduce our operating expenses and accelerate collaboration across the company,” Nexstar said in a statement provided to Deadline. “While it is difficult to make these sorts of changes, they will impact less than 2% of our workforce and allow us to focus on areas of growth for our viewers, partners, and customers. We are committed to managing through this period of unprecedented change in the media industry so that Nexstar continues to thrive for years to come.”

Nexstar also owns The CW, NewsNation, Antenna TV and The Hill.

2024 has been a tough year for the media businesses...even with political ad spending.

This year we've seen layoffs at TEGNA, ABC, the networks, iHeartMedia, Cumulus, and buyouts at Graham Media Group.
