Dallas sports fans victims of TV streaming wars

Jeff Miller wrote an article for Texas Monthly about how North Texas sports fans are caught in the shifting landscape of sports broadcasting, particularly due to the bankruptcy of Diamond Sports Group, which owns Bally Sports Southwest regional sports networks (RSNs).

Teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars have left Bally, opting for free-to-air or streaming options. The Mavericks have announced a deal with WFAA to broadcast their games over the air, while the Stars will stream their games through an app called Victory+.

The Rangers have not yet announced their 2024-25 season broadcast plans.

Meanwhile, the cost of cable subscriptions has increased in recent years, and many sports fans are now cutting the cord and opting for streaming services.

Now, we are in the weird period of deciding whether streaming or cable wins out in the streaming sports television wars. Streaming services can be a more affordable way to watch sports, but they can also be unreliable and may not offer all the channels fans want.

Either way, the future of sports broadcasting is uncertain.
