KHOU 11's "Juneteenth: The Pursuit of Economic Equality" documentary

HOUSTON, Texas – KHOU 11 will be airing a special documentary, titled "Juneteenth: The Pursuit of Economic Equality," highlighting the financial impact of Juneteenth on Black Americans and how it continues to shape our future.

Last year, KHOU 11 produced its first Juneteenth documentary, looking back at the meaning of June 19, 1865 and its history. But this year, we’re going beyond what happened in Texas.

"We go a step further because we talk about the pursuit of economic equality. What does that mean? We look at what was happening with the freed slaves right after 1865. What were their options? What were their possibilities?," said KHOU 11 anchor Len Cannon.

“It's a difficult history. But what’s great about this project is we’re trying to make it more accessible and easier for everyone to have this conversation and be a conversation that they walk away having gained something from it as well,” said KHOU 11 anchor Mia Gradney.

"Juneteenth 1865 - 2022: The Pursuit of Economic Equality" will air on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at 7 p.m. You can watch on KHOU 11 and stream the documentary for free on the KHOU 11+ app through your Roku or Amazon FireTV, or watch on KHOU.com.

You'll get the opportunity to hear stories from people such as:

    Sam Collins - Galveston historian

Dr. Marco Robinson - Prairie View A&M professor

Kirsten Mullen and William Darity Jr. - authors of From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century

Jacqueline Bostic - a descendant of Reverend John Henry “Jack” Yates, who founded Houston's historic Emancipation Park.

Houston-area homeowners who were discriminated against while trying to sell their home

Last year’s documentary, “Juneteenth: 1865 - 2021,” has received national recognition, winning several awards including:

Gracie Awards from the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation
-    Two Regional Murrow Awards for News Documentary and Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

"These awards are examples of our relentless efforts to deliver impactful, thoughtful journalism that helps celebrate the communities we serve," said Liz Roldan, KHOU 11 News Director.
