89.3 KSBJ tower upgrade means it can reach more listeners

If Hurricane Harvey proved anything, it is that we are Houston Strong. And out of the darkness of the storm, light can emerge.

89.3 KSBJ was taken off the air due to transmitter damage for two days during the flood's high waters.

As a result, the station has received some much needed good news.

Thanks to that damage, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved a move of the KSBJ transmitter to a new location.

Right now, the signal is available to 4.7 million people throughout the Houston area.

With that 30+ mile southwest move from Plum Grove, TX to northwest Houston, the signal will increase its reach to a potential 6.4 million listeners – an increase of 1.7 million people.

The station wrote on its website that this process can normally take up to two years. The station is feeling thankful it got approval in just nine days.

KSBJ signal improvements by the numbers

  • Relocate the 1,000’ tall, 100,000 watts of power 89.3 KSBJ FM transmitter from Plum Grove, TX (East of Splendora) closer to a highly dense Houston populated area (290 and Beltway 8).
  • Increase the population coverage to 6.4 million people. An increase of 1.7 million.
  • The increase in signal strength will allow for stronger penetration into buildings, apartments, and other facilities as well as the desired coverage over Katy, Pearland, Clear Lake and Downtown Houston. KSBJ’s signal will now be on the same level as other major radio stations in Houston.
  • Projected to increase listenership by 275,000 + people.
  • Signal improvement is planned to ensure KSBJ is clearly heard in all areas north, east and south of Houston including Livingston, Beaumont and Victoria.
  • KSBJ is seeking gifts for signal improvement which will have a lasting impact in our communities for generations and allow KSBJ to spread the message of Christ well beyond its current capacity.
