After seeing Coldplay on Wednesday at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion near Houston, I made the loooonnngg trek back up there to see Rod Stewart. For those of you suprised that I like Coldplay, you must be really scratching your heads now. I went to this show because I owed my wife after she went with me to System of a Down a few years ago at the same venue.
I was not a fan of Rod Stewart before the show, but I am now. The show was very good. It's hard to grow up and not hear a Rod Stewart song so obviously I knew most of the material. Plus he did his standards set. He had a great big white stage with he and his band wearing suits. It was a little Las Vegas in the northern suburbs of Houston Friday night. One hit that was absent was Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?
Rod can sing live and knows how to be a classic entertainer with his moves and costume changes. Plus he had a great backup band that sounded good. There were lots of female fans screaming like they were teens again. I am not saying he is up there with Jagger, but he is pretty good.
I had heard Rod kicked soccer balls into the crowd. He did not disappoint at our show. I believe all were signed by him. The guy can kick.
There were some negative reviews of the Houston show and some of his previous shows. These folks must be comparing Stewart's latest tour to to his past shows. Someone said this looks like it belonged in Vegas, but like I said earlier, I think that is the idea. Clearly it is working since it was a sellout crowd or really close to it.
Australian band The Kins were the openers.
