Miller is from New Orleans, and like many, was mad at the response after Katrina, so she started taking courses:
Miller, who earned a degree in atmospheric science (with a minor in math) from Texas A&M, began researching. She discovered that FEMA was under the Department of Homeland Security, and that A&M also offers a degree in homeland security. So she began taking courses — her current ones are Weapons of Mass Destruction and National Preparedness.
"I was surprised by how many facets of homeland security there are," she says. "The weapons of mass destruction class, that’s really fascinating to me, and I’m thinking, 'How, as a meteorologist, can I even apply what I know to homeland security and to weapons of mass destruction?’ Well, I have a friend who’s a bio-weapons expert in Fort Worth, and if you release a biological weapon into the air, you need someone to tell you: what’s the rate of dispersal, where’s it going to go, where’s it going to fall out, that kind of thing." The article talks about a lot of other stuff in Miller's life and focuses on the positive response Dallas/Fort Worth viewers have given her since returning to the airwaves.
I had the opportunity to talk with Miller over email. She seems like a very nice and genuine person. Good luck to her.
