Velvet Revolver and Alice in Chains at The Woodlands Pavilion near Houston

Last Friday the wife and I took off from work and made our way north to The Woodlands. This massive journey was to see Velvet Revolver and Alice in Chains at the pavilion. As you might imagine, it was a fantastic show.

William DuVall, who took singing duties from the deceased Layne Staley, did an excellent job on vocals. The wife said that if you closed your eyes, DuVall sounds just like Staley, and I agree. This was my first time seeing the band and it was a rare treat. DuVall and the Houston audience got a surprise when Doug Pinnick of Houston band King's X jumped on stage for a duet on Man in the Box. Hopefully this version of the band will record an album. To see a much more in depth review of Alice in Chains at The Wooodlands, click on HeyJosh's blog.

Then the energy level in the venue increased as Velvet Revolver hit the stage. Slash's now iconic shadow opened the show. I felt it took a few songs for them to really warm up or for the mixing engineer to get the sound levels right, but after that, it was on and an amazing show. An alleged clean and sober Scott Weiland is quite the singer and performer. You can't go wrong with the rest of the band either who mostly came from the original Guns N' Roses lineup. Based on the cheers as former bands' songs were played, I think there is a market for Stone Temple Pilots and original Guns N'Roses reunions. We got Velvet Revolver versions of Vaseline, Interstate Love Song, Patience, Mr. Brownstone, and It's So Easy among others. The band seems to pick the GNR songs that fit Scott's register. I wondered if the band's introduction was a jab at Axl Rose. The announcer said here is the band that brought back the punked in punctuality. We all know that Axl is notoriously late for shows, was this an allusion to that?

I would have loved to have pictures and video from the concert here, but I can't find any on Flickr or YouTube. With all of the crowd members snapping pictures and video with phones and actual cameras, I thought I would have my pick of the litter. Guess not.

I didn't see a review from the Houston Chronicle so here is the Dallas Morning News' slam against the bands' Metroplex performance.
