Why NIN's "Year Zero" is cooler than "Lost"

Trent Reznor knows how to appeal to the blogger generation by making a "Year Zero" a lot more than just another album.

Rolling Stone chronicles a very in depth game the Nine Inch Nails frontman is playing with fans:
It all started with a NIN tour T-shirt. An overeager fan realized that the bolded letters on the back formed a phrase: iamtryingtobelieve, which if you add a .com to the end of it, takes us to the first piece of the puzzle. Here, we learn about the drug Parepin, which has been added to the water supplies of Orlando as protection against similar acts of bio-terrorism against Los Angeles and Anaheim in 2009 (or -13 BA…try to keep up). This site speculates whether Parepin is a medium for the government to control the minds of its citizens.
Oh, but there is soooooo much more after that. Click here to see it all.

If you think about it, Axl Rose is doing the same thing with Chinese Democracy. He keeps making fans guess when the album is coming out by delaying its release. Then fans can search the Internet looking for album song leaks. Maybe the entire album will be available online before an official release date is announced.
