Notsuoh

Notsuoh is being talked about in a big way in the blogosphere (that's Houston backwards).

First BarTab brings us news that the club by the same name is back, taking over Clark's spot on Main Street:
Not only will November 1 be my last blog entry in your dear BarTab, but Clark's also will close its doors for the final time in the early hours of November 1. Not to worry if you just like that room, though, it will reopene soon after by the original propreitor, Jim Pirtle, and under its original name, Notsuoh.

To be fair, longtime Clark's headmaster Toby Lister actually kept quite faithful to Pirtle's vision of an arts-oriented complex in downtown Houston. Over the years countless films, bands and DJs have appeared in Clark's. Pirtle's new venture will no doubt be a lot more casual than was Lister's, but it looks like the arts will still have a home on Main.

Details: Clark's/Notsuoh, 314 Main St. 713-237-8220.

Next the Bayou City History blog talks about a No-Tsu-Oh carnival held way back in 1899:
Resembling something like New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebrations (without the nudity, I assume), the carnival was “designed to stimulate commerce by bringing people to the city,” according to the Handbook of Texas. Parades, balls and even a football game between UT and Texas A&M usually filled about a week’s worth of festivities in November.
The carnival's run ended in 1915. CONTACT: Leave me a Houston or Texas media news tip | COMMENT: Click to leave your thoughts on this post here
