I remember growing up, old Channel 39 was KHTV. Wikipedia has more:
It ran a general entertainment independent schedule including cartoons, off-network sitcoms, old movies, religious shows, westerns, and dramas, not to mention Star Trek reruns and the syndicated Soul Train dance show. It was the first UHF channel in Houston to broadcast in color. For a short time in the early 1980s, it was known as KHTV 39 Gold. It was the leading independent station in Houston as competitors entered the market.Being a geeky child, I watched the heck out of those Star Trek reruns. They used to have big marathons on Labor Day. Really, any child in Houston grew up on a steady diet of 39 classics like The Greatest American Hero, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, cartoons and sitcom reruns.
But your allegiance couldn't totally be to 39, because the new kid in town, KTXH Channel 20 aired some good shows too. I remember when 20 signed on, all they seemed to play were Speed Racer episodes. But then they had me at Transformers. Its afternoon/evening line up was decent too. Silver Spoons, Heathcliff, 21 Jump Street...etc.
Come to think of it, did I ever go play outside? Or just surf the UHF band? CONTACT: Leave me a Houston or Texas media news tip | COMMENT: Click to leave your thoughts on this post here
