Carly Smith has been promoted to chief meteorologist at KIII 3NEWS Corpus Christi, effective January 2026.
"This is a dream role in region that means so much to me," Smith posted. "I’m honored to lead our strong, talented, and dedicated team. Thank you for your support over the last four years and cheers to many more!"
Smith steps into the role following the departure of Alan Holt, who left the station in December.
“Over the past four years, Carly has become a trusted part of the Coastal Bend community,” General Manager Rebecca Cantu said. “The Chief Meteorologist role is a critical one, from helping viewers plan their day to leading during severe weather, and Carly brings the credibility and leadership this position demands. We’re proud to have her step into this role for our viewers and our newsroom.”
“Carly has earned the trust of our viewers and our team through her consistency, transparency, and calm leadership during high-impact weather,” news director Jonathan Munson added. “She understands how people consume weather information today and has helped push our coverage forward across streaming and digital platforms. Naming her Chief Meteorologist was a natural next step for our newsroom and for the Coastal Bend.”
She returned to Texas in January 2022 to join 3NEWS First Edition as a meteorologist. A native of Mansfield, Texas, Smith grew up just south of Arlington.
Smith began her career in Grand Junction, Colorado, forecasting for KKCO and KJCT. She later moved to Wichita Falls at KAUZ, and went on to WDTN NBC in Dayton, Ohio.
