Where is Pablo Alsina? Where was KHOU 11 sports?

Were KHOU 11 sportscasts sent to the showers early for a few days?

I just got back from a vacation in Galveston and you wouldn't have known it (unless you looked at my instagram) because I was still blogging.

And while I was away, the KHOU 11 sports department apparently went on a vacation.

According to channel 11 viewer email to me, there were a couple of days when there was no sportscast during the TEGNA station's newscasts.

Puzzled viewers also took to Facebook to ask the station what was going on.

Multiple sources have told me that main sports anchor Pablo Alsina is no longer with KHOU 11. I asked Alsina Thursday evening via Twitter Direct Message if he still worked at the station and did not hear back. However he did take to Twitter to say he is on vacation.

I emailed two KHOU representatives Wednesday to find out what happened to the missing sportscasts and never heard back from them either. Turns out one is away from the station.

Twitter also reveals why one sports staff member was not around to do the news. Sports reporter Daniel Gotera is on vacation.

No news on the whereabouts of weekend sports anchor Matt Musil during the MIA sportscasts, but he was on the Thursday 6pm news delivering news about the sports world.

Stay tuned.

  1. Sure hope that Pablo's vacation is permanent. I cringe every day when Sports come on & he is behind that desk.

  2. If the choice is a sportscast with Pablo or no sportscast, I'll take the latter option.

  3. Years ago KHOU dropped the sports segment from its 5pm newscast and I heard that not one viewer bothered to call in and complain. The facts are that sports fans have too many other ways to get their sports news on a timely basis. They are not a significant part of the local news eroding audience.

    1. I sure do not miss the sports as part of the daily newscasts. Quite often, our household turns off the news right after the weather forecast. Also, we sometimes delay tuning in the newscasts for 10 minutes to avoid the all of the "if it bleeds, it leads" stories.

  4. I have not been impressed with the sports lately at Channel 11. Yes I loved Bob doing the sports and Daniel doing the reporting and then Matt on Weekends

But Sports time has been all over the place lately at Channel 11. We have stories that take up a lot of time with the station and leaves no sports or something and I know when Bob stepped away it was just Daniel and Matt doing sports till Pablo came along. I am not impressed with him as we have had sports stuff on that I don't think have seen covered even.

But yes everyone taking that time off in Summer months before the Fall time etc. I know I see one person off more than rest a lot too with Channel 11 and don't see the rest that perhaps fill in for that person take time when that person comes back.

But as said have seen the sports time crazy lately with Ch 11 over this year and longer with even when Bob was around it was like rushed through because was on the last minute or two of the news. Then moved it up maybe one or two more minutes and then now it is right after weather and not right smack at end of the newscast.

But I found a better smoothness when Bob was there doing the Sports. I know he is not listed on the Channel 11 page with Bio anymore so figured Pablo main guy now but myself I am NOT impressed with him but probably wanted some diversity with the next head person had and such. I thought the Twitter Post from Daniel just meant he was taking a SOCIAL MEDIA break and not a break from the sports desk.

But guess Pablo will be back perhaps next week or such.

  5. The local news ship is sinking. It really doesn't matter who or if anyone happens to be on deck as the ship goes down. The demographic that the advertisers want is getting their news, sports and weather on their cell phones at all times during the day when they want it and not sitting motionlessly in front of a TV at 5pm, 6pm or 10pm. I hear the fat lady singing loud and clear.

    1. I concur with your comments completely. The fat lady is definitely singing as the local newscasts go down the drain.

  6. And yet KHOU's sports is still 1000 times better than Worthless McIlvoy and his clueless gaggle at KPRC.

    1. Channel 2 Sports is in a sad state. McIlvoy should stick with doing High School and College Sports Casting at games. He loses staff so frequently that you would think the Channel 2 Managers would realize the Sports Dept is sadly lacking.

    2. One can only hope that KPRC will see the light and give the top sports job to Adam Wexler. He is too good to be under McIlvoy.

    3. I posted the comment @ 6/13/2016 02:55 PM, and I can assure you that I am not Adam Wexler. I do not know the gentleman, but I have respected his work as a sports journalist for more than 16 years.

  7. I think Matt Musil should get the sports director/Weekday Sports Anchor gig permanently. He's been with KHOU for a long, long time and he's finally get a chance to shine on before Bob Allen returns to Channel 11. And as far as Mario Lopez goes, I wish him the best of luck whenever he leaves KHOU 11.

    1. I think you meant to say Mario GOMEZ. Mario Lopez hosts some entertainment show called, "Extra: the Entertainment Magazine."

  8. Adam Wexler is terrible. Dont be fooled by his radio gig. The guy has an annoying voice in both spectrums

    1. He's still better than that fat perv UofH hack he used to be paired with on radio. We is better suited for radio. And he's a knowledgeable stat guy. In a shrinking market like Houston for media folks, this is a good gig for him. And he's better than the Ken Doll McIlvoy, too.

    2. Mcilvoy is way better than Wexler when it comes to on camera. His delivery and writing is actually pretty good. You dont win news Emmy's by not being good. I would even go a step further and say Mcilvoy is just as good on the radio. He had a pretty good show on Fox Radio in Dallas back in the day.

  9. I have not watched Channel 2 Sports in forever.

Matt Musil I am surprised is still with KHOU after all this time too with ones leaving that have been at station for so long as well too.

If Pablo is gone I do wish him well and more and perhaps the way he did things didn't fit or something as well. I do hope there is still hope Bob will be back at the Station. I know Summer time is time for a lot to take lengthy vacations as have seen many times during those months people ask where is so and so and just they take Summer off as not much usually happens in the news during that time and come back in Fall when we have things heating up like Football too and other things to really ramp up with things and Rockets of course too in September with Pre season and then in October or such the Real season.

I do wish Mario Gomez as well when he leaves good luck again too in his next chapter.

    1. When's Mario's last day with KHOU-TV ?

    2. from what I understand according to Mr. McGuff, Mario Gomez is sticking around until KHOU hires his replacement.

  10. The fact of the matter is that the longer Pablo is away, the more watchable KHOU Sports becomes. He is simply the worst sports anchor I have ever had the displeasure of watching, regardless of market size.

Matt may be a bit to plain-vanilla, but he is the consummate professional and is infinitely more watchable than Pablo is or will ever be.

  11. His Twitter does not mention KHOU anymore.

  12. Late to Pablo's retirement party - boohoo (just now googled "what happened to Pablo...") YES! WOO-HOO! - I can now watch Channel 11 sports (fairly ) calmly, without bracing for a mariachi band finale! He was waaay too hyper!

  13. Why KHOU hired Pablo Alsina to begin with is beyond me. They should have picked up Jorge Vargas or someone else with some cred here in Houston.

  14. Jorge Vargas would have been a better pick. TEGNA would be lucky to have him. More cred, better voice, etc.
