"It is certainly with mixed emotions at I am leaving," Benton told mikemcguff.com. "I'm going to miss my co-workers at channel 2. Most importantly I will miss interacting with viewers that have become like friends and family. I was so blessed that I had the opportunity to tell their stories over two decades. I think what I will miss most is being a voice in the newsroom and represent those that did not have a voice in the media."

Name a big story, and Benton has probably covered it. Plus, she has the reputation for always getting the story right. She's won awards for her work, was named a YMCA Top Achiever, Best TV News Reporter by the Houston Press and one of Houston's Top 25 Women by Rolling Out Magazine.

Before KPRC, Benton worked as a reporter at Fox 7 KTBC Austin and KCEN Waco/Temple/Killeen.

Texas runs in Benton's blood. She is a Harlingen native and a University of Texas at Austin grad. She currently serves on the Texas Exes Black Alumni Advisory Committee, was appointed to the Elections Advisory Committee by Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and serves on the national board of the National Association of Black Journalists.

You might remember that Benton had a health scare earlier this year and missed a few months of work. She fully recovered in April.

Benton is leaving the TV news world for a new gig that has yet to be announced. As they say in her longtime profession...stay tuned for that news coming up.

Her last day is July 11th.

UPDATE JULY 14, 2014
Mary Benton is heading to work in media relations as a public information officer with Harris County.

  4. Congrats to my friend Mary. She is all class, all pro, and as reliable as they come. Few journalists get to leave on their own terms. Mary has earned this. Go get 'em Mary!

  6. Mary is a class act, and she has earned her street credibility. Hate to see another experienced TV journalist get out, but considering what's happened to TV news in this once great journalism town, I am not surprised. Hope to be mean to her in some PR job..LOL.
