Weighing Anchors: A Veteran TV Newswriter Critiques the Networks' Top Anchors

Mervin Block wrote for Walter Cronkite and other anchors at ABC, CBS and NBC. In his new book, Weighing Anchors: A Veteran TV Newswriter Critiques the Networks' Top Anchors, Block examines scripts from today’s top network anchors, including Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer, Scott Pelley and Anderson Cooper. This critique includes mistakes, blunders and falsified facts.

"I kept hearing network anchors making mistakes," Block told mikemcguff.com. "And I had never heard of any collection of anchors' (and correspondents') mistakes--factual, grammatical and stylistic. Not only did I figure a round-up of foul-ups would make a good story, but it'd also provide a batch of tips and little lessons about broadcast newswriting. I still hear anchors make mistakes, but I can't spend my life trying to corral them."

Also, check out Block's other book, Writing Broadcast News Shorter, Sharper, Stronger: A Professional Handbook.
