If you're surfing in here looking for why National Public Radio replaced Baylor University student run 107.1 FM KWBU Radio Free Waco, I finally heard the real story.
Former Production Supervisor, Operations Manager, and most recently President/CEO of KWBU, Brazos Valley Public Broadcasting, Kliff Kuehl admits in a podcast that mostly it was a recruiting issue. Not for students, but professors. Supposedly the academic types weren't interested in coming to work at a school and city that did not have NPR.
Not a surprise. But did it help the university's hiring ability? You tell me if you're there.
So the student station of 34 years might be dead, but the memories still live on. I have a small part of my KWBU collection here if you want to listen. Other alumni have more. There has been talk of putting up a web site with a collection of audio clips, but that is a lot of work and storage issues. It would be nice though.
What has happened to the Waco music scene since the demise of college radio?
