Liz Roldan, Stuart Boslow and Randy Klein to lead KHOU 11

 Houston, TX – KHOU today announced that Liz Roldan, Stuart Boslow and Randy Klein have been appointed to lead the station’s journalistic and content efforts. Roldan was named News Director, Boslow was named Innovation Director and Klein was named Digital Director.

Liz Roldan News director

 Liz Roldan is a highly experienced and celebrated journalist and leader with nearly three decades in broadcast news. Most recently, Roldan served as news director for the owned-and-operated CBS station, WFOR in Miami, Florida. Roldan is a 12-time regional Emmy winner and was recently recognized with the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for Outstanding Investigative Reporting in the Public Interest, the National Edward R. Murrow Award for News Documentary and the National Emmy® for Outstanding News Documentary.  Roldan is also a popular speaker and panelist at the IRE (Investigative Reporters and Editors), NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) and NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists) conferences. Roldan grew up in Houston, attended St. Vincent de Paul and St. Agnes Academy and is a very proud graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism.

Stuart Boslow Director of Innovation

 Stuart Boslow comes to KHOU from TEGNA station KARE in Minneapolis, MN where he served as director of content. A six-time regional Emmy winner and leader of a two-time duPont-Columbia University award winning team, Boslow is a highly accomplished journalist with over two decades of experience and is well regarded for his innovation, vision and strategy. Boslow has worked in leadership roles at a number of TEGNA stations including KENS in San Antonio and KSDK in St. Louis. Boslow is a native Texan, born and raised in Plano just north of Dallas.

Randy Klein KHOU Digital Director

 Randy Klein has been instrumental in shaping KHOU’s digital and social media strategy since 2018 in his role as digital strategist and regional digital director for TEGNA Texas. Klein has over 25 years of experience and prior to his time at KHOU he worked at TEGNA station WTSP in Tampa, FL as managing editor. Prior to Tampa, he spent 16 years as web manager at ABC station KTRK in Houston. Klein grew up in Houston, is a graduate of Sharpstown High School and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Houston.

 Springer added, “In addition to being great leaders and journalists, I’m pleased that all three have deep Texas ties. Living and working in Houston is personal, and I know that passion will shine through in everything we do at KHOU.”

 Roldan and Boslow begin their new roles in January 2021. Klein’s promotion is effective immediately.

abc13.com voted number one web site in Texas by the AP

Congrats to abc13.com for winning best news web site in the Texas Associated Press Awards. Web manager Randy Klein is the man. I have learned a lot working with him over the last five years.

He's been nice enough to let me help out with the technology section with my web only articles and 13 Clicks! Plus he let me develop Jeff's Consumer Blog and video podcast. But none of this probably made any difference to the AP. LOL!

What roped in the win was all of the news, video and extras the site offers. Klein and his staff are always on top of it.

I truly appreciate every thing he has done for me - most importantly, hiring me at 13 in the first place!

Liz Roldán joins CW39 Houston

Liz Roldán has been named CW39 Houston KIAH's new news director after exiting KHOU 11 in October 2024.

Kathryn Bonfield was named the new KHOU 11 news director in early December.

Roldán takes over at KIAH for Angel Covarrubias, who left in October.

"I am honored to join the CW39 Houston family and remain here in the city where my passion for journalism began," Roldán said in a statement.  "Houston is a vibrant, diverse community with countless stories waiting to be told, and I look forward to working with the talented team here to deliver news that informs, inspires, and makes a difference." 

Her KHOU hiring in December 2020 was a homecoming for Roldán, who grew up in Houston and attended St. Vincent de Paul and St. Agnes Academy. She replaced news director Sally Ramirez, who left for CNBC but shared in Channel 11 news leadership roles with Director of Innovation Stuart Boslow and Digital Director Randy Klein.

Before returning to Houston with KHOU, Roldán worked for CBS Miami 4 WFOR as news director and Executive Producer for Special Projects and Investigations before that.

The University of Texas at Austin grad also worked for NBC 6 South Florida WTVJ Miami as a managing editor, special projects producer, and assignment manager, and WFOR as an assignment manager. 

A 13-time regional EMMY winner, Roldán was recently honored with the EMMY for News Excellence. Under Roldán’s leadership, her teams have received multiple prestigious accolades, including two National Edward R. Murrow Awards in 2023 for Continuous Coverage and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Additionally, she has earned the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for Outstanding Investigative Reporting in the Public Interest, the National Edward R. Murrow Award for News Documentary, and a National EMMY for Outstanding News Documentary.

"Liz Roldán will be departing KHOU at the beginning of October," KHOU President and General Manager David Loving told mikemcguff.com.  "We wish her the very best in her next chapter and beyond."

In a new leadership structure, Roldán joined KHOU in December 2020, along with Director of Innovation Stuart Boslow and Digital Director Randy Klein. Former news director Sally Ramirez left for CNBC.

Before arriving in Houston, Roldán was the news director for CBS Miami 4 WFOR and the station's Executive Producer for Special Projects and Investigations.

She previously worked for NBC 6 South Florida WTVJ Miami as a managing editor, special projects producer, and assignment manager.  

The University of Texas at Austin grad's first TV job was with WFOR as an assignment manager.

mikemcguff has a new job!

OK, I'm ready for the big reveal even though it's been the worst kept secret...I'm changing jobs. Don't worry though, I will still remain at the KTRK 13 studios.

It's been a fun ride with the Special Projects Department and in the last two years working with Jeff Ehling, but starting Monday I will begin a new phase of my career at abc13.com. It's a homecoming of sorts, I temporarily worked there in 2001 before moving to the News Department.

Working with Jeff Ehling has been a blast. He is as much fun in real life as he is on TV. We have become good friends, but I feel the web is the place for me now. That's probably no surprise to those who read this blog. Anyone who posts here as much as I do and produces podcasts must love the web!

It's true that I have been involved with abc13.com over the last few years. At one point I was writing articles for the Technology section, designing Texans sections, blogging...etc, but that was just using 10% of my time on the side...a bizarre hobby if you will on top of my regular TV duties. Now I can devote 100% of my attention.

My new boss is Randy Klein who manages the web site. We are excited about the possibilities of a new web producer position. My first assignment before officially moving into the web world was launching the KTRK Political Blog. It looks like I will continue writing for the KTRK Consumer Blog too. Jeff won't totally be rid of me.

So if you don't always make abc13.com a part of your day, I highly encourage it. Lots of others sure stop by!
