Gina Gaston and Mario Elie triplets featured

Lauren, Gaston, and Glenn Elie, the children of abc13 KTRK anchor Gina Gaston and Houston Rockets legend Mario Elie, are featured as a family on Todd Freed's KUBE 57 "High School SportZone" show.

The Elie triplets of Memorial High School are looking to be future sports stars too!

Off the court, the younger Elies have also worked on a service project called Flower Power.

Gaston and Elie met while Gina was reporting on the Houston Rocket's first NBA championship in 1994.  Mario was a pivotal player on the soon-to-be championship team.  

A year later, Elie would make his iconic "Kiss of Death" corner 3-pointer shot with ten seconds left against the Phoenix Suns in Game 7 which would help lead Houston to their second NBA Championship.

Gaston and Elie married in October 2000. When the wedding bells rang, Elie was a player for the Phoenix Suns. 

In 2003, the famous Houston husband and wife's triplets were born. 

The start of Gina Gaston's TV news career

After graduating from the University of Southern California, Gaston, a Santa Barbara native, arrived at KLTV in Tyler, Texas to start her television news career.

She eventually moved on to serve as an anchor and reporter for WHTM Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and then WTSP Tampa, Florida.

In 1992, Gaston moved to channel 13 in Houston to anchor the station's newly expanded morning newscast with Tom Koch, Don Nelson and Doug Brown.  The team had chemistry which helped them top the Houston TV news ratings.

Gaston leaves abc13 KTRK for MSNBC

In 1999, Gaston left Houston and KTRK for the new NBC and Microsoft cable channel MSNBC. She co-hosted afternoon news and feature show "HomePage" with Ashleigh Banfield and Mika Brzezinski who is still with MSNBC on "Morning Joe." 

In addition to "HomePage," Gaston worked as an anchor for the 2000 presidential election among other news events. She also served as a fill-in anchor for NBC's Weekend Today show.

A return to channel 13 and Houston

In June 2001, Gaston returned to KTRK as the weekend anchor.  

A few months later, Gaston was re-united with morning anchor Tom Koch on KTRK's brand new Eyewitness News at 4pm newscast. 

Within a few years, Gaston moved to the 6pm and 10pm newscasts with Dave Ward when longtime Shara Fryer moved to reporting and then left the station.

The Lone Star EMMY award winner is very involved in the Houston philanthropic world, helping raise money for the likes of the Children's Museum of Houston.

In 2018, news articles were written about Gaston and Elie selling their house which was worth $3.45 million.  The couple's home is located in Piney Point Village.  The 7,500 square foot mansion was built in 1996 and included a home theater, gym, pool, and of course a basketball court.

In 2021, the house on 1 Mott Ln. which sits on a 34,114 square foot lot, returned to the market for $3 million.

Supporters help The Children’s Museum of Houston raise nearly $114,000

The Children’s Museum of Houston and chairs Divya Brown and Candace Thomas welcomed IDEO’s Digital Kids Team Lead, Michelle Lee, to the 2016 Friends and Families Luncheon on March 2, 2016 at the River Oaks Country Club. Lee delivered a dynamic message on fostering creativity and innovation through play by engaging attendees with role-playing and creative exercises during the luncheon. The event was a resounding success raising nearly $114,000 for the Museum’s early childhood and parenting programs.

Nearly 400 parents, educators, families and friends came together for awareness and philanthropy at this enlightening event with ABC 13 anchor Gina Gaston Elie serving as Mistress of Ceremonies. Lee’s presentation, which took a look into the creative process, had guests role-playing as reporters and inventing secret handshakes.

Guests noshed on a succulent three-course lunch which included chilled gazpacho soup, chicken and spinach roulade, and culminated with a mouthwatering apple blueberry crisp catered by the River Oaks Country Club. Flowers, which were donated by Trader Joe’s, were made into exquisite centerpieces by Lexis Florists and Philanthropic Fetes. Attendees were sent home with scrumptious Sprinkles Cupcakes
cookies.

The Marian and Speros Martel Early Childhood Educator of the Year Award’s three finalists: Maggie Abrego, Jonathan Doria and Evelyn Terry, were recognized at the event. The award is presented annually to an outstanding professional who possesses an exemplary commitment to young children’s education.

Proceeds from the luncheon will help support the museum's early childhood and parenting programs which focus on building parenting skills, providing information on child development and engaging families in the joy of learning together.

Looks like KTRK abc13 anchor Gina Gaston and morning meteorologist Casey Curry have been out and about around Houston raising awareness for some good causes.

Gina Gaston served as Mistress of Ceremony for the The Children’s Museum of Houston 2015 Friends and Families Luncheon on March 4, 2015 at the River Oaks Country Club. Chairs Valeria Burguières and Emily Dalicandro welcomed renowned speaker and author Joline Godfrey. Godfrey enlightened guests with tips from her book, Raising Financially Fit Kids.

At the top of the list of attendees were: Courtney Toomey, Lisa Barksdale, Kristen Berger, Gina Bhatia, Sicily Dickenson, Carmen Mach, Kim Petersen, Millette Sherman, Winnie Simmons, Kelly Sklar, Marcia Smart, Kathryn Smith, Tiffany Smith, Christie Sullivan, Candice Thomas and more.

Morning meteorologist Casey Curry also served as an emcee, but at the Second Annual Best Friends Brunch benefiting the aniMeals on Wheels program at the Omni Hotel Houston on Saturday, February 14, 2015.

Brunch chairs Teena Davis, Wendy Phillips and Kristy Phillips along with host committee, Bruce Padilla and Shelby Kibodeaux were head over heels when more than 200 guests, helped raise more than $100,000 to feed the hungry pets of Meals on Wheels home bound seniors.

Before the reception, guests enjoyed cocktails and a pet treat snack bar sponsored by the Doggie Snack Bar in the lobby of the Omni Hotel Houston. Guests enjoyed spinach, strawberries and pecan salad along with chicken salad and pasta salad. It was love at first sight when the aniMeals on Wheels Top Pet Fashion Show began. Awarded with the title of "aniMeals on Wheels Top Dog" for 2015 was Jesse and his owner Sonia Soto.

Some main Houston TV anchors were out last Saturday night to help raise money for The Children’s Museum of Houston. KPRC 2 anchor Dominique Sachse with husband Nick Florescu and KTRK abc13 anchor Gina Gaston with husband Mario Elie partied it up with Liza Minnelli and Village People look-a-likes.

By the way, Elie, who won two NBA titles with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995, started assistant coaching with the New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn Nets) in 2011.

The "A Night at Studio 54 gala" held at The Corinthian raised $890,000 from underwriting, big board and live auction.

Event chairs, Kathryn and Ian Fay and Liz and Tom Glanville invited Houston’s most generous leaders and supporters to turn the beat around and boost the Museum’s educational and outreach programs.

Gina Gaston supports the kids

Gina Gaston of KTRK abc13 showed her support for a Houston institution this week.

Gaston, a long-time Children’s Museum of Houston board member, co-chaired the museum's 20th Annual Friends and Families Luncheon at the River Oaks Country Club on Wednesday.

The event featured New York Times best-selling author and clinical psychologist Dr. Wendy Mogel who spoke about how parents can navigate the teen years when a child’s sense of entitlement and independence grows.

Dr. Mogel is a frequent guest on shows including The Today Show and CNN and is regularly interviewed by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and NPR.

Luncheon proceeds will support the Museum’s early childhood and parenting programs which focus on building parenting skills, providing information on child development and engaging families in the joy of learning together.
