Puro Tejano 106.1 Houston (K291CE-FM) launched Wednesday at 3 p.m. with the slogan "Houston's Only 24/7 Tejano Station."
"We just closed the deal to take over the signal, and instead of trying to compete with six regional stations, I decided to bring back something I had done seven years ago with the Tejano format," general manager Daniel Melendez told mikemcguff.com. "The last time we had the tiny signal of 101.7 in Pasadena, but it was the fact that it was not the only 101.7 (101.7 Bay City and 101.7 Humble) at the time made it so much harder to find advertisers."
It might not be hard anymore. Melendez tells me Puro Tejano 106.1 Houston has already sold three sales accounts before the station signed on the air. The new station's Facebook page gained almost 3,000 followers in just 24 hours.
"I have launched over 30 stations in my career, and this one here was and has been my biggest launch," Melendez admitted.
Eric Ochoa, who previously worked for the former Univision station Tejano 980 KRTX, will serve as music director. The station is currently looking to hire the remaining on-air staff.
The Puro Tejano 106.1 Houston core artist will be top artists like:
La Mafia
Ram Herrera
Grupo Mazz
Selena
"We want to explore new talents that have never been heard in Houston before," Melendez tells me. "Puro Tejano is also opening the playlist to other artists and bands that are local to the Texas Region."
