WFAA 8 Dallas - Fort Worth meteorologist Mariel Ruiz shared the personal news of her recent diagnosis with an aggressive form of cancer called triple-negative breast cancer.
With no family history of breast cancer, Ruiz found the lump herself during a routine self-exam and emphasizes the importance of early detection, which is why her outlook is positive.
Ruiz explains that she has already begun intensive chemotherapy, which may lead to her on-air absence and noticeable physical changes.
Despite the challenges ahead, she expresses her determination to fight hard and remain hopeful.
Ruiz also thanks the community for their support, kindness, and encouragement, stating that it means more than they will ever know.
She concludes by asking for understanding if she looks different, reassuring viewers that she is still herself, just facing a different kind of storm.
Ruiz joined WFAA 8 in 2021 from TEGNA sister station KVUE Austin, where she had been since 2019.
The Arlington native previously worked for THV11 KTHV Little Rock, Arkansas.
