Elma Barrera gets a great profile by Mayra Moreno to showcase her 34-year career at abc13 KTRK where she also was Houston's first female Hispanic TV news reporter.
Not only did she report, but Barrera was one of the founders of Univision 45 Houston KXLN and the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Here is a portion of the report:
"She was working in radio back then and she was at Channel 13 to interview the news director. The topic?
"Why aren't there more Hispanics in the media?" she recalled.
The very next day, she found herself back at Channel 13 working her very first TV news story."
Prior to joining channel 13, the University of Houston grad worked for 96.5 KAUM producing a weekly documentary.
She also worked at Houston's Public Television KUHT 8, where she both produced and anchored Houston's inaugural Spanish-language television news program.
During her early tenure with KTRK, Barrera earned recognition as one of four local volunteers selected by the White House to assist in organizing Houston's inaugural International Women's Conference.
Barrera, who is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists hall of fame, resigned from abc13 back in 2006.
I was lucky enough to work with her in my time at KTRK. When I last saw her at a party about a decade ago, Barrera was involved in the film business after leaving television.
Last month legendary Elma Barrera (Houstons first Hispanic reporter) stoped by the station!
