Houston stations team up for Rebuilding Juntos

Rebuilding Juntos is an initiative to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September/October 2022) through the East End Community Revitalization program.

The Rebuilding Juntos initiative will be helping three families on East Avenue L in the Manchester neighborhood revitalize their homes which were built in 1939, 83 years ago. Rebuilding Together outlined work, done at no cost to the homeowners, will add 20 years or more to the life of a home, making it safer and more resilient against disaster.

Rebuilding Juntos is targeting the week of September 26-30, 2022, and it will surpass the 100 homes goal established in July of 2019. The East End Chamber of Commerce will help celebrate the milestone projects with a ribbon-cutting event for the homeowners.

To recognize Hispanic residents as a cornerstone of the Houston area, RT is also partnering with community organizations, representatives, and businesses to make this event a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Media Partners

Rebuilding Together will be partnering with three Houston media networks to produce an awareness branding message for Rebuilding Juntos. The media partners Telemundo-TV, KPRC-TV, and Mega 101-Radio will be involved with promoting Rebuilding Juntos, volunteers to work on the individual homes and providing news segments outlining the work done.

Meet the homeowners:

Jose Rodriguez, 73 and Angela Rodriguez, 70

Contractor work completed:

    Winter Storm emergency repairs completed

    Roof replaced

Upcoming repairs

    Internal safety improvements

    External repairs and painting

Mr. & Mrs. Rodriguez raised their kids in their home of 45 years. The house is even older, built in 1939, 83 years ago. We’ve already helped them recover from the Winter Storm of 2021, and then we made the home more resilient against storms. Now we can make the home safer as they age. Mr Rodriguez is recovering from open heart surgery. Mrs. Rodriguez has fallen on the front steps and was injured. Their son Joe helps take care of them, and our repairs and improvements will help they age safely in place before eventually passing the home to a new generation.

Andrea Benitez, 33, Carlos D. Benitez, 14 and Andrez G Vasquez, 6

Contractor work completed:

    Winter Storm emergency repairs completed

    Roof replaced

    Electrical systems upgraded

    Structure stabilized

    Bathroom fixtures replaced

    Internal safety improvements made

Upcoming repairs

    External repairs and painting

The Benitez family has only lived here for 3 years, but the house was built in 1939, 83 years ago. After we helped them recover from the Winter Storm freeze in 2021, our Community Revitalization program gives us the opportunity to make major improvements to the safety and resilience of the home and help this young working family in need of assistance.

Diana Gonzalez, 72

Contractor work completed:

    Roof replaced

    Electrical systems upgraded

    Structure stabilized

    Internal safety improvements made

Upcoming repairs

    Internal safety improvements

    External repairs and painting

Ms. Gonzalez has spent 31 years in her home, built in 1939, 83 years ago. In order to age safely in place, she needs help with necessary repairs which she can’t afford on her teacher’s pension.

About Rebuilding Together

For 40 years, Rebuilding Together Houston has been the only organization in our region to provide hundreds of families annually with home repairs. With more than 14,680 neighbors served, we have averaged one family helped per day for 40 years. Our work adds 20 years or more to the life of a home, making it safer and more resilient against disaster. We enlist community volunteers and licensed contractors to repair the homes of low-income elderly, U.S. Military Veterans, and working families in need. Our work improves the safety and structural integrity of homes that are passed from generation to generation, helping to retain the character of Houston neighborhoods by keeping families in communities that they helped to build.  Together with our corporate supporters and community partners, our mission is Repairing Homes, Revitalizing Communities, and Rebuilding Lives. Our vision is safe homes and communities for everyone.
