Rosie Nguyen joins abc13 KTRK

Rosie Nguyen joins abc13 KTRK as the station's Race and Culture Journalist.

She takes over for Cory McGinnis who was KTRK's first Race and Culture reporter from January to around September 2021.

Nguyen comes to Houston from ABC4 KTVX Salt Lake City, Utah where she was a 7pm anchor for CW30 KUCW.  Before that, she was an ABC4 MMJ and fill-in anchor starting in January 2018 with the Nexstar station.

"I will be honest, these past few months were extremely rough," Nguyen posted on Instagram after her abc13 KTRK hiring.  "For those of you who know me, social justice is my passion. But I contemplated leaving journalism and questioned if I could ever find a role that would fuel my fire again. After being told that these types of stories were too 'controversial' and that I would not be supported in this type of work anymore, I didn’t know what my future would be like. To now work for a company that not only believes in the importance of these stories, but to dedicate resources is a dream come true."

Nguyen also hosted a nightly ABC4 segment called "In Focus" which dealt with complex community issues.

The Emmy award-winner recently won in the breaking news category of the Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards for anchoring during the George Floyd protests in Salt Lake City.

Nguyen got her professional start with KEZI 9 News Eugene, Oregon as a weekend anchor and reporter.

The University of Utah grad, who also earned her master's degree from UU, interned with KTVX, KSL 5 TV SLC, KUTV 2News/KMYU SLC and U92 KUUU-FM SLC. Nguyen's hometown is Salt Lake City.

While in school, Nguyen was Miss United Nations USA 2013.

Also coming to Houston with Nguyen is fellow ABC4 News colleague and investigative reporter Jason Nguyen who stated in his KTVX bio that Rosie Nguyen is his girlfriend.

No word on if Jason Nguyen will work for a Houston television station.

UPDATE
Jason Nguyen is now a KPRC 2 Investigates Producer.
