Recent Houston Chronicle departures in 2017

Writing about the Houston Chronicle is like covering a black hole.

There is little info streaming out of the old Houston Post fortress on the West Loop at Highway 59/I-69.

That said, there have been some high profile departures this year.

The news of longtime Chronicle columnist Ken Hoffman hitting the road for CultureMap was enough to get me back from by blogging break. Then last week, we found out staff political cartoonist Nick Anderson was shown the door.

And now more have been announced this week.

According to sources at the Chronicle, senior editor Maria Carrillo is leaving the paper to become assistant managing editor for enterprise at the Tampa Bay Times in August.

Todd Stone, Deputy Managing Editor for News, will be leaving at the end of the year. His wife, science and environment writer Kim McGuire, will leave ahead of him with their family.

The couple came from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune where Houston Chronicle editor Nancy Barnes also previously worked.

They will be returning to Minnesota.

Speaking of the Star-Tribune, I was in the Minneapolis a few weeks ago and on the stands was a magazine produced by the paper all about hometown hero Prince. Pretty cool.
