In a surprise move this evening of Super Bowl Houston weekend, Jillian “JJ” Simmons has announced she is leaving her 10-3pm slot on 97.9 The Box KBXX.

The popular radio DJ explained in a video on her website jjonthemic.com, that she is involved in many activities from radio, non-profit work and writing a book. After some health issues, her boss told her she might want to cut back. That conversation made her pause, take note of life and eventually resign from her six-figure KBXX job.

Simmons told her fans that she plans to stay in Houston, travel the world, but other than that, has no concrete plan for the future as of yet.

"But what I do know, is that from this day forward, I will wake up everyday and live in my purpose," Simmons said. "I am confident that God has something so amazing for me and it is coming. And I dont know exactly what it is, but until then I'll keep doing what I love to do."

The radio fixture and NewsFix contributor has been at KBXX for five years. She previously worked at HOT 96.3 WHHH Indianapolis, Indiana, WBLS New York, 101.1 The Wiz WIZF Cincinnati and WROU in Dayton, Ohio.

Outside of radio, Simmons is the founder of the JJ's I'm Me Foundation. According to its website, the foundations serves to "encourage at risk middle and high school girls to be the best version of themselves, by exposing them to leaders and influencers in the community who provide career development, lifestyle planning, health and wellness training, and character education."

Last October, Simmons published her book "Without Bruises: A Journey to Hope, Help and Healing," her story of an abusive relationship.

As a single mother, Simmons has also started a network and website SingleMomsRock.com to motivate others.
