Univision 45 team wins Gabriel Award

Univision KXLN 45’s news anchor/reporter Rebecca Suarez & news photographer Douglas Zepeda win national award

Univision KXLN 45’s news anchor/reporter Rebecca Suarez and news photographer Douglas Zepeda were awarded a national Gabriel Award during the Catholic Media Conference held in St. Louis, Missouri on Thursday, June 2nd.

The duo's story "Ante la Adversidad" ("In the Midst of Adversity") won in the Community Awareness and/or PSA National or Local TV Release category.

Since 1965, The Gabriel Awards has recognized the “best in artistic, creative and inspirational media presentations that entertain and enrich with a true vision of humanity and a true vision of life.”

Suárez is a native Houstonian and award-winning journalist. Besides her work at channel 45, she is a licensed attorney with a law degree from University of Houston Law Center . Her passion for storytelling has earned her several accolades, including seven Lone Star Emmy Awards and a Gabriel.

Zepeda is also a native Houstonian with 16 years of experience providing visual storytelling through his camera. He is a Lone Star Emmy Award winner and the recipient of the Frances C. Moore Medical Journalism Award. Prior to his 10 years working in Univision, Zepeda has worked for KIAH's former CW39 News, abc13 KTRK and NFL Network stations.

Other Texas winners of the Gabriel Award went to Radio Station of the Year (Religious) KLUX 89.5HD – "Good Company" in Corpus Christi, Texas and Radio, National Release – "Mary's Touch - Brian Caswell's Story" in Austin, Texas.
