He was 79 the station reported. The cause was an apparent heart attack.
Brown worked in the broadcasting business for 50 years. Stops included KWTX 10 Waco-Temple-Killeen, KRGV 5 Weslaco, KHOU 11, and then of course a long career at KTRK where he spent 32 years.
He was a heck of a nice guy. What you saw on TV was what you got in real life. He had a very calming presence. When I worked with him at KTRK, we would talk about Baylor University football.

"Doug could cry in the morning or bring a tear to his eye at someone else's pain in a story, a family that had been hurt or someone in distress," anchor Tom Koch said in a TV interview. "That was Doug Brown, just a sentimental guy."
"If Doug could have bottled his attitude, he could get rich," weatherman Ed Brandon added. "He always had a smile on his face, a good frame of mind and never had a negative thing to say about anybody."
"There is no sweeter man than Doug," KTRK anchor Melanie Lawson wrote on her station Facebook page. "Believe me, that big smile and kind face you saw on the news is exactly what Doug is like off-camera....only nicer. We are so sad for his beautiful wife Susan and the rest of his family, and we are keeping them in our prayers. I hope you will, too."
Brown retired from channel 13 in February 2008. Casey Curry replaced Brown at the station.
