While other news shows wondered gravely about the severity of the treatment of a woman of that age over a traffic incident, Marrou employed an amused tone from the get-go. "A feisty grandma in Austin — dare we say one tough grandma — has met her match: a deputy's Taser" was how he introduced the story and video on Tuesday's 6 p.m. news.
"Getting wild," he remarked later after the woman reacted to the Taser. At the end, Lucero chimed in: "She looks like she's all of 4-feet-7." Laughter ensued.
At least one viewer was not amused. "They laughed and smirked at her as if she was an animal being prodded on a farm," the e-mailer wrote. "This incident was so hilarious to them; it shows how smug and insensitive they have become after all these years on television."
Informed of the comments, Lucero indicated their reactions to the story weren't meant to be insensitive. Instead, the humor "was innocently brought on by the unexpected feistiness of the grandma," she responded in an e-mail. "If I remember the video, she was a very petite lady and stood up to a male police officer twice her size. I'm sorry if the viewer saw it any other way." READ THE REST
