New WNBC channel: "If it looks like a newscast, we're dead"

The much anticipated WNBC cable channel to be called "New York Nonstop" is about to be unleashed? Maybe. There have already been delays.

You have to check out the memo sent to the staff from WNBC-4’s News Manager Michael Horowicz that Felix Gillette of the New York Observer writes about. It reads like a line drawn in the sand type of thing from a Clint Eastwood movie. Here is a small part:

If it looks like a news piece, viewers will just keep clicking. You will probably get guidance from your platform mangers, if not, please feel free to consult me. Think "look live," ("I'm standing on line with some people buying lottery tix," and then walk down the line talking to people all in one take. Simple. Easy.) Think swish pans, dutch angles- but try to make it look different. Sometimes, your contribution will just be a series of soundbites butted together. If it looks like a newscast, we're dead. It will also look out of place compared to all the other content on the channel. READ MORE
