TV, radio will regret print's plunge

Work in TV or radio long enough and you hear stories of how some stations won't do a story until it appears in the paper.  So even if someone pitches a good story, it will not be believed to be a real story until it appears in print.

I read a journalism book that really showed this to be true when a west coast bureau network correspondent called the east coast network headquarters to tell them he was in the middle of an earthquake.  He said he was ready to go live on the radio if needed.  They weren't interested.  Then someone called him back a few minutes later wanting a live report after the news appeared on the AP wire!

Variety talks about this in an article that says print's demise could have a domino affect on radio and television.  Meaning that broadcasters who just rip and read from the paper won't have as much to rip and read anymore.

Maybe.  But most large newspapers are cutting down on foreign and national bureaus, or business and entertainment reporters, not the local news.  Although in small markets, this could be true.    CONTACT: Leave me a Houston or Texas media news tip | COMMENT: Click to leave your thoughts on this post here
