I produced a story on ServiceMagic.com a few years ago. That site allows homeowners to post a project (plumbing problem, room renovation..etc) and let the contractors bid on it. The idea is to allow you to choose the person with the best price or qualifications.
Now the site has started screenapro.com. This site allows homeowners to screen the backgrounds of contractors by name. That background check supposedly searches for things like criminal records, sex offender registries, state-level licensing, insurance and more.
Hiring a contractor can be a VERY scary procedure for anyone. I'll take all the help I can get. My wife used ServiceMagic and didn't even know I had done a story on it (That shows how much she watched my TV work!). She liked the results.
I would love to hear from someone who has used either site.
