Well, the Astros ended the first half on a positive note, only 10.5 games behind Milwaukee. It's not a huge deficit to overcome and they'll need a little help along the way.
Here's my bold predictions for the rest of the season:
No team has been able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. The only team leading their division at the break that'll make the playoffs....the Mets.
The Brewers close out their season with 14 TOUGH games...half are at home where they've had a fantastic 30-13 record. Milwaukee hasn't made the playoffs in more than two decades and I don't see them breaking the streak. They're freakin' Milwaukee...choking is eminent.
San Diego plays in the most competitive league in all of baseball. Holding off the Dodgers might be too much and I expect their stellar first half pitching to cool off.
That leaves the Mets. Pedro Martinez will make it back sometime in August, giving him just enough time to tune up for the playoffs. Their speed on the base path makes them a dangerous team...did I mention their line-up is pretty damn good, too? Oh yeah, then there's Billy Wagner. Astros fans may know something about that guy.
Lastly, my prediction for Houston...they'll fare no better than fourth in the N.L Central. The Cubs are hitting their stride and Milwaukee will battle St. Louis for second place. I can't believe I just picked the Cubs to make the playoffs. What's the world coming to?
