My story of a Vegas high roller

You expect me to come back from Las Vegas with stories of high-stakes gambling with the in crowd at Caesar's Palace while sipping Champagne with two showgirls. Maybe a story about a comped suite after winning a cool million.

In reality I spent a little more than an hour at our hotel casino.

But it's time for me to share with you my ultimate Vegas trick. I had an area to myself for much of the time, didn't have to dress up and partied with a true American hero. Yes, I hit the big time in the penny slots section. You read right, that is 1 cent gambling with Honest Abe Lincoln himself.

Don't knock it until you try it. The penny slots are plenty high tech. They have touch screens that allow you to read up on how to play the game, colorful graphics and funny themes like the tabloids or the wacky magician.

Normally when you gamble in Vegas, waitresses come by and offer free drinks. Not here. You are in it to win it and no one will distract you. I kept my gambling strategy alcohol free.

So before you write off my ultimate trick, check this out. The wife gave me a ticket to play that had $21 on it. I took that ticket, stared at it, and thought about how I didn't want to let the Mrs. down. Through true grit, I placed a 1-line bet here, a 9-line bet there. Nothing could break my laser like concentration.

So did I win?

You betcha. $30 big ones baby! I cashed out at $51 bucks. Show momma what you got! Let's see how many others can pull that off in an hour! (Of course, I'm not talking about the $20 the wife and I blew at the Venetian the day before on 25 cent slots)

Another Vegas trick, if you see a very long taxi cab line outside of the casino. Don't sweat it, just walk past all of the suckers waiting in line and head to the street. We tried this at the Hard Rock Hotel and always found a lonely taxi cab waiting for our business on the street right in front of the casino. We were back at our hotel before we would have moved a couple of feet in line.

Maybe those people in line should play the penny slots too.

Since I came out ahead in the city of lost wages, I'll share one more trick that I heard this morning. I have not tried this myself so someone will have to confirm this. Supposedly if you go to the outdoor marketplace across The Strip from the Monte Carlo (next to the indoor mall with the giant Coke bottle) there is a place called TIX. At this booth, you can get two for one show tickets for that night. Your best chance to get tickets are during the week, but it can work on the weekends too.
