Robert McClain with the South Houston Police Department said, "It's the first one we've ever had where a suspect has actually left the scene with something that was going to be able to put us in his general location."The clue was the cell phone itself. It's equipped with GPS mobile locator. The service, offered by Nextel for a fee, allows subscribers to track their phones.
"Log in as the client, and then go ahead and find out where that phone is located through the GPS," explained Jason Pullion of Total Communications.
That's what detectives did. They logged in as the cell phone customer and pulled up a log of locations where the cell phone was used, thereby tracking the suspect's movements. The trail wound from South Houston to the ship channel area.
A detective on the computer relayed locations to officers in the field, leading to a pair of arrests.
