Wednesday, August 23 Mobile, AlabamaThis morning we're in Mobile starting our trip along the coast back towards New Orleans. This one year anniversary should be about so much more than what is happening there. That's why we took to the road. It won't be any big picture look - but a few snapshots of what the new normal is here.
We turned off I-10 last night on the way here to drive along the beach road for a while. My eye was immediately drawn to the damage that still hasn't been cleaned up - and there is a lot of that. Over the next several days we will try to avoid the temptation to write about it or spend our days shooting it. You've seen it and by now (unfortunately) damage from this storm does not surprise people.
I think so much more of the story is what you don't see. The lack of sunbathers on the beaches, the lack of open businesses, the impressive progress some places are making and the staggering lack of progress others have made. New Orleans mayor C Ray Nagin used a phrase in Spike Lee's incredible documentary that I love. He said in the days right after the storm many people he dealt with were "stuck on stuck". Across the Gulf Coast some still are.
We're off ... First stop is Bayou La Batre - a fishing city on the Alabama coast.
I'll write later and see you on the news tonight at 10.
